The UK has an extensive transport infrastructure system which needs regular inspection. Tunnels, bridges, manhole covers, drain covers, railway tracks, and viaducts - the UK has thousands of installations that require monitoring and upkeep. Making repairs to many of these puts human operators in hazardous situations, either high up, near water, or close to transport such as cars or trains. Much of this is carried out by human operators, putting them at significant risk from moving vehicles, falls, trips, electrocution, and more. I3DR is developing stereo vision systems for installation on robotic platforms, which can then be operated remotely, in some cases, operate autonomously, and identify areas which require repair and maintenance, thus limiting risk to humans. Imagine a future where the traditional hammer tapping test for detecting tile defects may become the thing of the past for building maintenance. Led by Professor Shenghan Zhang and Yantao Yu from the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (with Mike Tong from Campus Management Office), this project incorporates the usage of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV)- based thermographic images to test the feasibility of detecting façade damage. By incorporating this method, this will ramp up building maintenance efficiency by providing a more accurate and effective way to detect defects on building exteriors, leading to significant cost savings and improved sustainability. It will also eliminate the need for workers to climb up buildings, safeguarding their safety. To further alleviate manual operation, this project is also Integrating an auto reporting system to revolutionise data analysis and identify defective regions on building façades. This system can be leveraged with other digital twin systems, enabling seamless integration of visual inspection outcomes. This project can also potentially extend its benefits by identifying leaks in exposed pipelines, enabling early detection and contributing to energy savings. Utilising collected data for analysing thermal anomalies in building facades can pinpoint energy wastage and insulation problems, leading to reduced energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions for more sustainable building operations.
