Friday Feature The Teaching and Learning Center recently teamed up with Drexel’s Steinbright Career Development Center to help Drexel faculty support students in developing professional skills and clarifying career goals. Here are some tips for instructors from our Steinbright colleagues: 1. Share career information Professional associations are underutilized but powerful resources for networking and researching careers within any industry of interest. O*NET contains a database of more than 3,000 associations for students to join. Review these organizations with your students and check out https://lnkd.in/gCFM7JUD for more information! 2. Encourage self-discovery Encouragement from mentors and having confidence in their counsel are key factors in students' readiness to choose a specific career path, reducing feelings of decisional stress and improving their sense of employability. Have confidence in what you say to students, and they will have confidence in themselves! 3. Relate education to career success 75% of recent college graduates polled in 2018 by Gallup (https://lnkd.in/e4eRRW7t) agreed or strongly agreed that they had a college professor or staff member encourage them to pursue their professional goals. Students often seek out professors with similar educational and professional backgrounds for advice or next steps for career readiness.

I am so excited to share the Pre-Conference Workshop I am helping to facilitate during the 2024 NACADA Region 2 Conference on Wednesday, April 3 from 12:00 PM to 3:00 PM. "Take a Gamble on the Mid-Level Practitioner: Redefining the Profession" celebrates the mid-career professional in the field. In higher education, mid-level practitioners face challenges that affect them both personally and professionally. Some advisors seek advancement to the top, while others are happy in their roles as “helping professionals”. When promotions are unavailable to this group, it can be difficult to find appreciation in their jobs. In reality, when a vertical path is unavailable at an institution, it could be horizontal movements that afford the best opportunities for aiding in professional development. Join the conversation to learn how you can forge a rich, rewarding career independent of the conventional “climbing the ladder” approach and can engage in your own #HorizontalBranding on and off campus. Join us in this three hour pre-conference session that will include (1) review of the topic, (2) networking with fellow mid-level advisors (3) panel discussion from industry leaders and (4) career success planning to overcome your struggles and conquer your doubts! Our team includes - Brandon B., Bob Bullard, Deborah Coburn, Francesca Pugh-Opher, Ph.D., Keith Schweiger, Kathie Sindt, Claude Taylor, and Julie Traxler There is still time to sign up -- We are P2. https://lnkd.in/eXnp8iqR
