“In a world where there are over 450 sustainability logos in operation, many companies use green claims and eco-labels to help market their products. But currently, there is no universal standard for these labels, leaving many consumers confused by all the different symbols and logos on the market. “It’s clear from our research that consumers want to be better informed about the environmental footprint of their food and that there is widespread support for a universal, independent and factually substantiated label for sustainable food products. Supermarkets, as key players in the food system, can influence #sustainability among consumers and producers through their product range, promotions, shops and policy. So how do German #supermarkets take responsibility for environmental sustainability? #Superlist Environment is launching in Germany to compare the contributions of ALDI Nord Group, ALDI SÜD, Edeka, Kaufland Deutschland, Lidl in Germany and REWE on  🌱 the protein transition 🚜 sustainable agriculture  🌳 climate plans Superlist is a multi-year research programme by think tank Questionmark. It compares supermarkets' contributions to a healthy, sustainable and fair food system throughout Europe. Questionmark is initiating this research project in Germany for the first time, supported by Madre Brava, Albert Schweitzer Foundation, and ProVeg Deutschland with advice from Deutsche Umwelthilfe. Superlist is also conducted in the Netherlands, Belgium, Sweden and the UK. Questionmark is starting data collection for this Superlist after the summer. The report and ranking are expected early 2025.

German supermarkets are among the largest food retailers in Europe. Their size, and therefore their enormous purchasing and marketing power, gives them unprecedented influence on food production and consumption. The question this raises, to us at Questionmark Foundation, is to what extent these supermarkets use their influence to make the food system more sustainable. - Are their climate goals in line with Paris and do they have adequate plans to achieve these goals? - How do these supermarkets contribute to the necessary protein transition? - To what extent do these supermarkets contribute to the development of nature-inclusive agriculture? - Do their procurement policies prevent deforestation in palm oil and soy supply chains? Questionmark Foundation will answer these questions with the Superlist Environment Germany project, announced today. With the insights derived from Superlist, we will provide German supermarkets with direction in their sustainability strategies and kick off a race to the top among them. Moreover, Superlist insights will support German civil society in substantiating their advocacy work. Superlist Germany is part of Questionmark's broader Superlist program, also being implemented in the Netherlands, Belgium and tested in Sweden and the UK.

Yesterday #HelloFresh co-hosted the third and last event in the German parliament to discuss the possible impact and methodology of a carbon label as part of the initiative Together for Carbon Labelling. After discussing the science and economical points of view in the first two events, the third event discussed how such a label needs to be designed to actually help consumers. The TCL initiative was built by food companies in collaboration with scientists and is advocating for the introduction of a carbon label to offer consumers full #transparency on the carbon footprint of their food choices. To push the carbon label for Germany and Europe HelloFresh and other organizations and scientists are collaborating with the German policy maker Rita Hagl-Kehl MP. Once again the alliance invited external speakers to add their perspective to a label that offers carbon transparency. Dr. Anke Zühlsdorf and Prof. Dr. Carsten Leo Demming highlighted the importance of educating consumers about their food choices as well as the importance of introducing a regulated label methodology to avoid misleading marketing around sustainability.
