The Truth about Advertising by Jay Bertram. Today's truth. # 2. Merged advertising agencies fail 100% of the time. Remember all the great independent agencies in Canada that used to have a unique, defined reputation in the market? Then, they merged with others and were washed away into a sea of sameness. Chiat/Day, Palmer Jarvis, Taxi, John Street, Grip, Foster, Miller Myers Bruce DellaCosta, and V&B, to name a few. They have all been merged, stripped of their culture and their creativity, and downsized. No agency merger has ever become more prominent, more successful, producing better creativity than the agency brands before the merger. The most recent merger of Wunderman Thompson and VMLY&R has deformed into the latest meaningless vegetable goulash, VML. Like watching NASCAR, the big wreck is inevitable as the sum of the parts will become less than 50% of its original size over time. Hundreds of jobs will be lost through 'efficiency' If you work for a public company, dust off your resume, approach your favourite independent agency (ZAK, Rethink, No Fixed Address, Broken Heart Love Affair) or better yet, start your own agency.
