LET’S TALK MARKETING!
Mental Health Awareness Week might have been in mid-May, but this post from McDonald's truly resonated with me. Their marketing team has always been iconic, but this initiative goes deeper, touching the soul by conveying that it’s okay not to always smile. It’s a powerful message: kids can crave a Happy Meal even when they’re not feeling their happiest.
This campaign aligns perfectly with mental health awareness, showcasing McDonald's commitment to the community and the people they serve. While their menu might not be the healthiest, they excel in providing convenience—and addressing mental health, even for young children, is a crucial part of that service.
The layers of thought and strategy in this campaign are impressive and heartening to see.

As we head into Autumn here’s your Halloween-flavoured reminder that when it comes to measuring & managing your #socialvalue we realllllly need to be moving beyond only ‘counting stuff…’
I’m lucky to have the hard conversations around understanding & articulating outcomes every day - whether I’m training folk on topics like #theoryofchange and #socialreturnoninvestment or whether I’m conducting evaluations. Just a few of the barriers I see to engaging with outcomes are…
- trying to understand them sitting in a dark room on your own (don’t do it ❌ talk to your stakeholders)
- trying to ‘curate’ before you ‘create’ (just get them all down on paper first - then you can review, refine, combine, group and/or dump 🗑️)
- going too ‘big’ (step back from ‘improved mental health’ and listen to what people are telling you about the steps that lead there 🪜)
- getting lost in the many different kinds of outcomes eg. social, economic, environmental… (we all do. Breathe and take one group at a time.)
- feeling trapped by a framework that stops at outputs (get rid of it - make the case for ambition over compliance #youwanttobreakfree 💪)
And if you need more help reach out to communities like ours here at Social Value International and our National networks.

Anyone else McCrying 😭 over McDonald's new campaign for Mental Health Awareness Week?
🍟 McDonald's have removed their iconic smile from Happy Meal boxes for the first time ever to promote the importance of Mental Health Awareness Week.
New research reveals that nearly half (48%) of UK children feel pressure to be happy all the time, even when they don't want to be 🧒
👉 As a Father myself, this campaign really hits home for me!
Available alongside the limited-edition Happy Meal boxes are sheets of stickers that showcase an array of emotions that children experience 😁 😭 😍 😰
🤝 McDonald's are also collaborating with BBC Children in Need to provide families with access to a dedicated hub of resources designed to encourage candid conversations on emotional well-being with children.
I think this campaign is exceptional because 🧠 it's simple and clever - but also, it demonstrates how McDonald's are using their scale and 'clout' for good, something many other companies are lacking in today's digital landscape.

The age of technology has had its benefits but it has also come with negatives. An advisory issued by U.S. Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy confirms that social media is hurting our kids. Social media takes away from reality and can cause mental harm to our children.
Social media has it's benefits but this article suggests that parents can harness the balance between their online presence and their personal lives, emphasizing the importance of self-care and setting boundaries to protect mental well-being.
