Get ready for the Welcoming City Conference that will be held on February 28th & 29th, 2024, at Victoria City Hall for a day filled with inspiration, knowledge, and community connections. This conference, inspired by the City of Victoria's Welcoming City Strategy, aims to bring together Welcoming City network partners, practitioners, and newcomers for a day of learning and networking. The event will facilitate capacity building and dialogue on the Welcoming City Strategy, roles of partner organizations, City of Victoria, the Welcoming City Committee and people with lived experiences. I attended a Diversity Dialogue Dinner led by UPMC and YWCA York the other night and here's what I learned: 1. Showing Up Matters. Especially if you consider yourself devoted to Justice & Equity work but even if you're not … showing up to learn and understand is essential to your growth. 2. What we all need most is more collaboration and communication across organizations and communities. Less siloing and more true community building. Less competition over funds and more connection over serving humanity. 3. Radical Kindness is still the language we all want to speak. Not the language of violence but that of cooperation, compassion and empathy. 4. There is no greater bridge builder and safe space-making tool than FOOD. It's our biggest commonality. 5. We need more events like this and to make them widely accessible for everyone to experience so that more connections can be made. 🤔 Thank you to Iyatunde Lark-Rivers, MHA for being a fantastic facilitator and to stephanie romero for being a light with such positive energy.

If I've ever needed a reminder about why joining the Board of the Town Team Movement was so important to me, it comes down to this. The fabric of our society is degrading at a frighteningly rapid rate. We think of the US as a highly fragmented society, but according to the Edelman Trust barometer, they score higher than us on the Social Fabric measurements we see below. 30% of US citizens would be willing to help someone with strongly differing social views, where only 24% of Australians would. 50% of American's trust Government 😳 where only 45% of Australian's do. I do believe this must be rebuilt at grass routes. And the positive energy and work of do-ers helps me believe in the future. We must become active contributors to our society with the same zeal many of us contribute to our work. It's a slipper slope we are on, and we have to be change agents, or walk blindly into chaos. Edelman (and a special shout out to our corporate and Government partners who see the current impact and exponential potential of this movement and Jimmy Murphy and Dean Cracknell who have overseen the foundation and growth and provide constant inspiration)

On week away from a Global Experience (GEx) programme to Chicago! There has been one theme that I'm still trying to wrap my mind around, and it was recently revisited by discussions at the Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) and when reading an interview with the Director of the Singapore ETH Centre. At SIWW, I got to sit in at a discussion about how community empowerment tended to emerge in the presence of weak leadership. The challenge was posed about how we can align both together. In other words, what would leadership look like if it was not so much about spearheading forward but takes a more inward approach toward the uplifting of members? Perhaps, for the latter, an image that comes to mind would be boiling water that overflows a pot...? In the interview with the Director, he described Singapore's research as "emphasising certain priority areas while leaving enough white space for bottom-up ideas", thus potentially reflecting a similar attempt at alignment. How these efforts are (or perhaps, "should be") experienced by different segments of the community is a discussion worth having, but I haven't had enough conversations to properly have ideas about it yet haha. For the upcoming Chicago experiential trip, I'm looking forward to seeing how threads have weaved together so that Chicago is now a food powerhouse. It doesn't seem as simple as a bottom-up community empowerment and top-down legislation. There's at least also historical and cultural contexts that drive a lot of different narratives. The range of visits that we have planned hopefully give very valuable glimpse into the different threads. And I'm really thankful for all the partners who have been so supportive in agreeing to meet and speak with us. I'll tag you when I post subsequent updates about the visits!
