The recent online backlash following Tarte Cosmetics’ Bora Bora influencer trip sparked a conversation about the role of all-expenses-paid trips in influencer marketing. Edward East, group CEO and co-founder of BDB considers the reason for the social media storm in response to the trip: - Influencer trips can often build a community of creators who want to work with the brand and result in a larger ROI than the trip’s cost. - However the timing, excessive gifting and lavish content made this trip come across as tone-deaf considering the current economic climate. - Although the goal is never to receive negative feedback, the trip went viral and did receive a flood of coverage, likely driving brand recognition.
