If your obituary was honest, what would it say? I was interviewed recently for the upcoming “Living a Life that Outlives You” summit https://lnkd.in/gj2aqcga. We talked legacy. One way to start defining legacy is to zoom to the end. Write your obituary. But first, release self-judgment. None of this “she didn’t live up to her potential” nonsense. Try to write a clear-eyed picture of yourself. Now read it back. Is it true and complete? Are you satisfied, or is something missing? 2015 seems like a lifetime ago, but the words of this TED talk still ring so true. https://lnkd.in/gA5NKMes Sometimes I think about what I wish I had understood when my journey into adulthood was beginning, and this is a big part of that. I am trying to teach my kids that despite everything society and education tells them, being the best is not the best route to making the biggest difference. As Margaret Heffernan says in this talk, "Helpfulness sounds really anemic, but it is absolutely core to successful teams and routinely out performs individual intelligence... What drives helpfulness is getting to know each other." Don't waste your life trying to get the biggest contract or appointed leader of the newest project. Don't waste your life trying to be better than, or even as good as, your colleagues. Don't turn your work into a competition. Instead, what I have learned, is I get to be a part of something so much greater when I invest in the people around me. "Bringing out the best in others is how they found the best in themselves." Get to know your colleagues. Help them achieve and thrive and succeed. Be as reliant on others' skills and wisdom as you would like people to be reliant on your own. Live out the truth that every person has and brings value.
