Hiring an #ML engineer be like: 🕰️2014. #MLOps/ ML engineering was not even a thing... Recruiter: we need someone who can build a logistic regression with scikit-learn. Me: I used a Titanic dataset to build a logistic regression. Recruiter: Welcome aboard! 🕕2024: Me: I've built high-performance machine learing systems, deployed over 100 models to production, and mastered Kubernetes. I'm proficient in AWS, GCP, Azure. I'm skilled in Terraform, CI/CD, Airflow, mlflow, SQL, no-SQL, and Python. On weekends, I'm building my own chatbot. Recruiter: Hmm, I'm not sure that's quite enough... In today’s competitive market, *specialization* is more valuable than ever. While being a generalist has its perks, companies are now seeking deep expertise in specific areas. 🔑 Focus on a domain you are passionate about—whether it’s Cloud, AI/ML, Data, and more.. Here’s why specialization matters: ➡️ Deep expertise stands out – Being skilled in coding, system design, or DSA makes you valuable, but expertise in a specific domain (e.g., Cloud Solutions Architect, iOS Engineer, security engineer, data engineer, ML Engineer, etc.) sets you apart. ➡️ Become the go-to expert in your field– Specialization makes you indispensable. ➡️ Differentiate yourself – Specialization helps you shine in a crowded job market. Both generalist and specialist roles are available, so keep an eye out for those that match your skills. To simplify your job search, focus on roles that align with your specialization, ensuring you don't miss out on valuable opportunities. #softwareengineer #softwaredeveloper #engineers #developers _______________________________________________________________ 🙋♀️ I am Lakshmi Marikumar, your HR ally, subscribe to my YouTube channel @thefriendlyrecruiter for tips on prepping for your interviews by industry experts. AI Engineer at Kalbe Farma | ML Engineer @X Corp | B.C.Sc in Artificial Intelligence | Founder of Data Sorcerers
When comparing the job ecosystem for AI Engineers at foreign companies (outside Indonesia) or even multinational companies within Indonesia, a significant difference becomes evident. These companies place a strong emphasis on the specialized role of AI Engineers, with a focus on skill sets that are directly related to artificial intelligence. Candidates are often evaluated on their knowledge of Machine Learning (ML) and Deep Learning (DL), their ability to perform Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA), and their experience in model training and research. This contrasts sharply with some local startup environments, where the AI Engineer role can sometimes encompass a much broader range of responsibilities, including Database System Management, Frontend Development, System Integration, and even deploying applications using Docker. The specialized focus in multinational and foreign companies allows AI Engineers to concentrate more deeply on developing and refining AI models, ensuring they stay at the forefront of technological advancements in the field.
