On World Bartender Day, we want to celebrate the role of this professional in the ancient regime of diplomacy. The existence of a cocktail called 'Diplomat' today is because traditionally, diplomacy was often associated with diplomats dressed in impeccable suits and gowns, gathering in grand embassy receptions and clinking their glasses filled with champagne or fine wine. These gatherings were a key part of diplomatic socialization in the last century, providing a platform for networking and relationship building, but also posing risks of diplomatic faux pas, misinterpretations, and even excessive alcohol consumption. That era no longer exists, and the 21st century demands a different kind of diplomacy in public health, environmental sustainability, and technological innovation. Today, diplomats are no longer confined to embassy walls. They are out in the field, working with non-governmental organizations, corporations, and international institutions to address the world's most pressing problems. Their efforts focus not only on building bridges between nations but also on promoting well-being, innovation, and sustainability. What do you know about the pioneers of diplomacy in past centuries?

Formal Reception Protocols: At state banquets, the head of state of the host country is expected to greet the visiting dignitary at the entrance. Benefit: Such formal receptions set a respectful tone for a visit, facilitating smoother diplomatic relations and demonstrating the host's commitment to honour and diplomacy. Gift-Giving Customs: During official visits, it is customary for leaders to exchange gifts that represent their countries' cultures. President Obama was known for giving thoughtful gifts that reflected American culture and history, such as artisanal crafts or books by American authors. Benefit: Adhering to gift-giving protocols can deepen personal and national ties, showing appreciation and respect for each other’s cultural heritage. Dress Codes: One notable instance when a political leader's attire drew attention for not fitting a formal setting occurred during the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) summit in 1993. Russian President Boris Yeltsin appeared at the summit's formal proceedings wearing a leather jacket and jeans, which starkly contrasted with the business suits worn by other world leaders, including U.S. President Bill Clinton. This breach of dress code protocol at a highly formal international gathering was widely reported and commented upon, illustrating the importance of adhering to established dress standards in diplomatic settings to maintain decorum and respect among international counterparts. Benefit: Following dress code protocols enhances the event's decorum and respects the hosting organisation's standards, promoting equality and seriousness among attendees. Seating Arrangements: At international summits, seating is meticulously planned according to diplomatic protocols, often based on the alphabetical order of countries or seniority. Deviations from this can lead to misunderstandings or perceived slights. Benefit: Proper seating arrangements prevent protocol breaches and ensure that all parties feel fairly treated, facilitating smoother interactions and discussions. Official Speech Etiquette: Leaders like Winston Churchill were known for their impeccable timing and respect for protocol during speeches. They always ensured they spoke appropriately for the occasion and audience. Benefit: Adhering to speech protocols can significantly enhance a leader's reputation, allowing them to convey respect for their audience and occasion, thus enhancing communication effectiveness. Ceremonial Protocols: Ceremonial protocols, such as those followed during the Japanese Tea Ceremony hosted for visiting dignitaries, require specific actions and etiquette, which leaders like Former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe famously respected. The event industry is a powerful force to drive positive change in the world we live in. Why? Well, let's get back to the beginning: I am currently reading yet another book about the history of Diplomacy. While reading it, it was extremely interesting to see that my mind was constantly making parallels between the event industry and diplomacy. Don’t get me wrong, I am not saying that we, in events, are saving the world by any means. However, it was fascinating to observe that both involve building connections between people, fostering relationships, and creating meaningful exchanges. My interpretation of diplomacy is that it is all about building bridges. Building bridges is what we do as event professionals. We create platforms that connect people, industries, and ideas. Events serve as bridges in the sense that we are facilitating communication and collaboration between individuals.   They play a crucial role in shaping interactions that extend way beyond the immediate context of the event. They foster connections that sometimes can have a ripple effect on a broader scale. This positions the event industry as a powerful force to drive positive change in the world we live in. Trump’s approach to the Middle East, including the Abraham Accords, marked a turning point in the region, benefiting the UAE. Also Sheikh Mohamed’s discussions with Bush on historical challenges reflect the UAE’s acknowledgment of the difficulties the Middle East has faced. The UAE’s ability to navigate these challenges alongside U.S. leadership demonstrates its diplomatic agility.

African diplomats have a right to create a new space in Detroit, Michigan to not only be on the playing field BUT own and OPERATE the field they are creating. Washington D.C. is NOT the only place where African diplomats people can create influence and decisions on Africa. It's time to rethink how we leverage African diplomacy as well as engaging our Presidential Cabinets in Africa as it pertains to connections and showcasing new cities like Detroit, Michigan as a launching pad of long-term opportunities.
