The answer is yes, but successful implementation requires the right type of solution and integration. Done right, wind assisted propulsion systems can offer immediate reductions in fuel consumption and emissions, taking into consideration operational profile. Calculations by our business area Kongsberg Maritime's researchers show that a theoretical Handymax container cargo ship running a route in the North Atlantic from Rotterdam to New York would see a fuel burn reduction of 19.3% annually with the right wind assist propulsion system. A 109km pipeline has been laid for the Northern Lights CO2 transport and storage project and this was fully supported by Miros. This company is a marine monitoring and environmental intelligence company. Miros supported the project through a method which involved deploying a cloud-enabled WaveSystem and an additional RangeFinder wave radar on project vessels. Through doing this, Miros was able to provide accurate sea state measurements in real-time, which ensures efficient, as well as, safe pipelay operations. 𝐍𝐞𝐰 𝐊𝐚𝐦𝐬𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐱 𝐝𝐞𝐬𝐢𝐠𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐬𝐥𝐚𝐬𝐡 𝐆𝐇𝐆 𝐞𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐛𝐲 𝟒𝟎-𝟓𝟎% The versatile Kamsarmax bulker, currently a flexible and popular size chosen by many dry bulk operators, is designed for worldwide trading and will be fitted out with latest energy-saving features as well as some entirely new ones developed by the partners. Fuel costs are likely to be cut by around half, it is claimed. The design will cost around $10 million more than a conventional Kamsarmax bulker today but the investment should pay back within about five years based on average charter rates. Kongsberg Maritime Vice President of Strategy and Business Development, Oskar Levander, revealed details of the innovative bulk carrier in Oslo yesterday. The ‘Super-Efficient Bulker’ will be equipped with a unique combination of three tiltable Norsepower rotor sails and two bound4blue suction sails to harness the greatest benefits of wind energy, Levander explained. Other features include air lubrication, a controllable pitch propeller, a hybrid shaft generator with frequency control, and an intelligent energy management system.
