As a communications professional, I've frequently been dismayed by the stark disconnect between lofty corporate messaging and the actual reality. In higher education, it's no different. As a parent of a talented young woman who has excelled in science and math throughout high school and into her first year of college, I am acutely aware of the challenges she faces in pursuing a degree in engineering. Despite the growing emphasis on diversity in STEM fields, there remains a significant gap in the support and incentives offered to young women like my daughter. While it's encouraging to see increased dialogue around the importance of diversity in engineering, the reality is that many schools are not providing nearly enough scholarships and programs to support these brilliant young minds. Scholarships and targeted programs are crucial in not only recognizing their achievements but also in encouraging them to continue their journey in a field that desperately needs their perspectives and innovations. It's time for educational institutions like Virginia Tech College of Engineering (where my daughter has been on the Dean's List) and industry leaders to step up and create more opportunities for young women in engineering. By investing in their education and providing the necessary resources, we can help bridge the gender gap in STEM and build a more inclusive and innovative future. Let's champion the cause and advocate for more scholarships and programs that will enable our daughters, nieces, and young women everywhere to thrive in engineering.
