A major milestone reached as we have submitted our tender response to the Great British Nuclear #SMR competition. “We have entered this competition with a proven track record of processing SMR reactor technology internationally, a fuel that is already licensed and in operation, and a reactor designed for manufacture,” said Andy Champ, GEH UK Country Leader. “Our BWRX-300 has evolved from proven, simple, boiling water reactor technology and is not just smaller, but through innovation even further simplified. We believe this uniquely positions us to reliably deliver an SMR with the most value for money and along with our strategic investment partners, be a valuable partner to the UK Government as it strives to reach its net zero target by 2050.” The BWRX-300 is a 10th generation SMR design that builds on decades of real-world operating experience and innovation, using a standard design, a proven delivery model and GEH’s experience with cross-border regulatory collaboration. GEH and Ontario Power Generation are developing the first BWRX-300 at OPG’s Darlington site near Toronto. Early site preparation work has been completed, construction is expected to start in early 2025 and commercial operation to commence by 2029. It’s impressive to see GE Vernova and GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy’s commitment to advancing nuclear technology with their BWRX-300 SMR design. The focus on innovation, proven technology, and a robust UK supply chain demonstrates a strong strategic approach to supporting the UK’s net-zero targets by 2050. However, it would be beneficial to see more detailed information on how GE Vernova is ensuring a secure fuel cycle and preparing for potential socioeconomic changes, which are critical for long-term sustainability and resilience in the energy sector. Looking forward to seeing how these aspects will be addressed in future communications and projects. The global socioeconomic landscape is rapidly evolving, particularly with the rising influence of BRICS nations and the emerging economic divide between the East and the West. This shift is likely to have significant impacts on global supply chains, introducing new challenges and opportunities for industries worldwide. Companies must adopt flexible and resilient supply chain strategies, diversify their supplier base, and enhance cross-border collaborations to navigate these changes effectively. The ability to adapt to these geopolitical and economic shifts are crucial.

As the Worlds [self-designated] #1 Fan of the BWRX-300 since 2018: https://www.facebook.com/groups/1032713003519847 commenting on social media platforms in support of the BWRX-300 is constricted by not having an overnight capital cost (OCC) figure. In 2018 the data sheet proudly displayed $2000/kW. By 2019 it was $2,250/kW. Now just a nebulous comment. Meanwhile Westinghouse are in print for the @ $3400/kW for the AP300 and the R-R UK SMR's <£2 billion is at ~$5400/kW. Please GE Hitachi Nuclear Energy be bold and let your little [social media] helpers have something to boast about.
