Hello everyone! I'm thrilled to make my first post here and share a bit about myself. My name is Alyssa Bryant, and I've taken a somewhat unconventional path to where I stand today, ready to dive into the world of product management. My career began in the healthcare sector, where I was immersed in environments that demanded both compassion and precision. Working closely with patients and healthcare professionals, I cultivated a deep understanding of the importance of empathy and the impact of effective solutions on individuals' lives. This experience has given me a unique lens through which I view product development—always with the end-user's needs and well-being at the forefront. The adventure continued as I moved halfway across the world to South Korea, spending two transformative years as an Elementary ESL Teacher, a role that sharpened my skills in communication, cultural awareness, and adaptability. These years were invaluable, teaching me the importance of clear messaging and the power of education, skills I believe are critical in product management. Now back home in the US, and embarking on an exciting journey into product management, I am driven by a passion for innovation, and the power of well-crafted products to solve real-world problems. I woke up early one morning, just after concluding the training phase of my fellowship program in product management with the Women Techsters Fellowship, and, for the first time, told myself, "You are confused. You need support and guidance." It took several days of applying for jobs, receiving rejection emails, and deep contemplation to admit that I needed guidance. Tech was not as easy as I had thought. I knew I had to find a solution. I'm not one to sit around with a problem; I always find solutions, which is one of the reasons I chose to pursue a career in product management. One day, while surfing LinkedIn as usual, I stumbled upon a post by the amazing Chioma Oko. I wanted to scroll past, but the post kept getting more interesting. I finished reading it, and in the comments, I saw it: "PM Oasis," community program offering support, career navigation, avenues for learning, and opportunities to meet other amazing product manager. I didn’t think twice. I slid into her DM and expressed my interest. She chose me to join the community program, PM Oasis. Today, my journey with PM Oasis begins, and I can't wait to see how my growth curve will unfold. ✨ 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭 𝐌𝐚𝐧𝐚𝐠𝐞𝐫 - 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐧 👩🚀 As I rewatched 'The Martian' recently, I found myself enthralled by the movie and it struck me how much we, in our roles as product managers, founders, technologists, engineers, mirror the journey of its protagonist, Mark Watney. 𝐎𝐮𝐫 𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐬 𝐦𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭 𝐛𝐞 𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐚𝐩𝐡𝐨𝐫𝐢𝐜𝐚𝐥, 𝐛𝐮𝐭 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐚𝐝𝐯𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧 𝐭𝐞𝐜𝐡𝐧𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐲 𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐫𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐢𝐧𝐠, 𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐬𝐮𝐜𝐜𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐞𝐬 𝐞𝐱𝐡𝐢𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠! 🌟 Problem-Solving Mindset: The Martian Way 🌟 Remember Watney's iconic line, "In the face of overwhelming odds, I'm left with only one option. I'm going to have to science the shit out of this"? That's us too! In the face of daunting challenges, we embrace a problem-solving mindset. It's about breaking down complex tech puzzles into manageable bits and conjuring creative solutions. 💡 Innovation: Unleashing Our Inner Botanist 💡 Stranded on Mars with limited resources, Watney transforms into an innovator par excellence, much like us in our product management roles. He grew potatoes on Mars – if that's not thinking outside the box, what is? 🌀 Adaptability and Agility: Riding the Market Waves 🌀 Just as Watney adapted to Mars' harshness, we pivot and twist with market dynamics. Remember the rollercoaster of COVID-19? How swiftly we adapted is a testament to our agility. He states, "You do the math, you solve one problem... and then you solve another." 📡 Effective Communication: The crucial Link 📡 Watney’s survival hinged on his effective communication with NASA, just as our success hinges on clear, concise, and continuous dialogue within our teams. In our world, every update, every piece of feedback, is a lifeline that keeps our projects thriving. 🌠 Final Thoughts: Embracing Our Inner Martian 🌠 As technologists, we are constantly on our own Martian journey. Each challenge is an opportunity to innovate, each setback a chance to grow stronger. So much can change in a year! Last year around this time, I was looking for a job after being included in Meta’s first round of mass layoffs. I had taken the holiday season to regroup and recharge, and by the spring I was so deep in the job hunt waters that I barely came out for air. Rounds of interviews, preparing for interviews, company research, and take home assignments took up all my time. The irony is that product manager interviews are rarely like the actual work of a product manager. The highly structured interviews everyone seems to have adopted from the FAANG companies are more about adherence to a formula than the product management tasks I love. That’s why when Women in Product offered scholarship tickets to their annual conference for those impacted by layoffs, I jumped to apply. When my application was accepted, I was delighted to clear my schedule from interviews for those days and focus my attention on some great speakers, inspiring talks, and a chance to focus on some complex product problems other talented PMs were facing. It was an unparalleled chance to listen to some of the smartest minds in my field talking about users, pain points, and brilliant product ideas. The two days of the conference gave me more than a chance to learn from the best. They enabled me to clear my mind from the dreary routine of interviews and focus on what I enjoy most about product work. It reminded me what I was working towards and gave me renewed energy for the search. A few weeks later I started a job as product manager for a product I love, Adopt a Pet. I’ll always be grateful to WIP for not just putting on an amazing conference, but for providing the opportunity for all of us affected by industry-wide layoffs to attend. Back home in New York, at Meta’s office in Hells Kitchen today for a talk with the Enterprise Products Program Management team about the future of our profession and how to manage projects/programs in one of the most valued companies in the world. We talked about the challenges they are facing having to manage so many programs with reduced headcount, how to elevate their roles so they can prioritize better, select the programs they should spend most of their time on, influence and leverage their project sponsors, manage stakeholders more effectively and help Meta get the most value out of the work they do. It’s a great team, seasoned, used to operate under high pressure and constraints. In many ways they are sharing similar pains to the ones many other project professionals are facing across industries and across the globe, addressing them with determination and a good deal of common sense. He’s hard working and conscientious and always looking for ways to improve. Never a dull moment, and managed against the odds (in our opinion) to come back from his snowboarding trip in one piece. Read Phil's Journey with us below: “I joined Filament in November 2021 after having spent a decade in Project, Program and Business Analysis roles in the Financial Services sector. Before all that I’d graduated with a degree in Business Information Systems and so it was probably somewhat inevitable that I gravitated towards big projects which leveraged new technologies and systems to deliver business and customer value! I made the transition into Product Management at Filament as the company itself was making the transition from being a Consultancy to a Product-led organisation, which proved to be a hugely valuable learning opportunity for me personally. During this time we adopted a continuous discovery mindset when ideating on new initiatives or concepts and made prototyping/wire-framing a key component of our product discovery processes. We continued to improve on our experimentation mindset especially for our backend-matching and machine-learning led solutions and we implemented a quantitative data view of how our users were interacting with Syfter so we could properly measure user adoption. On joining the organisation in 2021 I was especially passionate about putting good Product and User Experience Design at the heart of how we build products. I’ve always been super grateful that the Filament Leadership team has backed me when I’ve wanted to make changes, and so this led to us bringing our first full time Product Designer into the Syfter Product Team in early 2022. After Filament completed its Series A in April 2023 I was promoted to Head of Product and tasked with expanding our Product & Design function, which resulted in the hire of another two Product Designers to continue driving the product forward! I promise I’m not exaggerating when I say I love working alongside top-class Design and Engineering professionals every single day to deliver meaningful solutions to customer and business problems. Without it, even the most well-structured frameworks and the most talented teams can crumble. That's why, here at Product Weekend, we're dedicated to nurturing teams to create safer spaces - spaces where new ideas and change can take root, grow and flourish. 🌱 The tricky part is going beyond the surface of psychological safety which can usually be reached with a team building or workshop, and create a culture around it.
