Developments like this strengthen the case for Mexico's trans-Istmo de Tehuantepec corridor.
In the coming months, the drought-stricken Panama Canal will reduce the number of daily transits further due to prospects of 38% less rain than normal. The authorities will gradually reduce the number of vessels to just 18 ships per day by Feb. 1, 2024. ”According to our information, this is a restriction of transits and not just booking slots. It will only be possible to transit the canal with a booking either through the pre-booking periods when they open or via the auction,” Soren Stokkebaek Andersen, regional commercial manager at the canal agent Leth Agencies, confirms to ShippingWatch. #shipping #freight #oceanfreight #logistics #infrastructure

In the midst of global warming and rising sea level, it's ironic that drought is being experienced along this passage. A conflict in my thoughts. The alternative, Suez Canal, is a longer route but one also currently having on its apron the unrest between Palestine and Israel. How risky is it at the moment for merchant ships navigating through Suez? The big question, how does this delay and longer transit time impact cargo owners? What alternatives could help cushion the impacts?

Due to a record-breaking lack of rain, the Panama Canal Authority has significantly reduced the number of vessels transiting the Canal 🇵🇦 This in order to conserve water and hopefully avoid having to reduce the maximum allowable transit draft for vessels. The reduction to 22 (from about 34-36) vessels per day will remain in effect until 1 February 2024 when it will be reduced to 18 vessels per day. The Authority has advised that vessels without bookings may face "indefinite delays". The Authority recently amended its auction system by introducing a 'fast pass' system obtainable by vessels which have been waiting for at least 10 days, paying a one-off premium at special auctions and this relates to the last available transit slot per day. Slots have been reported as selling for 7-figure sums. In early November, it was reported that one operator paid almost USD 4 million for a slot for a neo-Panamax vessel and Panamax vessels are averaging USD 1 million to USD 1,5 million. Where does this leave owners and charterers? Learn more about the delays in transiting the Panama Canal here: https://lnkd.in/gAyTfZz8 #panamacanal #shipping #restassured

The number of ships holding up to cross the Panama Canal has come to 154, and spaces for carriers to book entry are being diminished in an exertion to oversee clogs caused by progressing dry spell conditions that have disturbed the most shipping door since spring. The current holding up time to cross the canal floats around 21 days. The Panama Canal may be a basic exchange connection for U.S. shippers heading to Inlet and East Coast ports. The Joined Together States is the biggest client of the Panama Canal, with add up to the U.S. sending out and purport holder cargo bookkeeping for around 73% of Panama Canal activity. Forty percent of all U.S. holder activity voyages through the canal each year, a few $270 billion in cargo. The gigantic buildup is the result of water preservation measures that the Panama Canal Specialist sent in late July due to the dry spell. #PanamaCanal #Container #vessel #shipper #logistics #TreadLogistics

The transit of the new containership Ever Max through the Panama Canal on Tuesday, August 1, highlights the challenges faced both by the Panama Canal and the container shipping industry. What could have been the largest container shipment to transit the canal in its 109-year history instead found itself limited in the number of boxes both due to the decline in traffic – 15% below capacity due to the market - and the Panama Canal’s draft restrictions to save water during the prolonged drought. The ship’s maximum draft exceeds the canal’s normal 50-foot maximum for the Neopanamax locks, so the authority required the boxship to reduce its load to meet the 44-foot maximum permitted draft. 🚢 Breaking News from the Panama Canal Authority! 🌐 Due to slight improvements in water levels, the planned reductions in daily transits, set for next month, are getting a delay. 🚧 This adjustment restores two vital slots, bringing the total transits to 24 daily transits from January 2024. Why does it matter? 🤔 🌊 As vessels increasingly divert from conflict in the Red Sea, these changes offer a sigh of relief for the shipping industry. ✅ The Canal, originally slated for 20 slots in January and 18 in February, now allows for six additional daily slots, a 30% increase from the initial projections. ➡️ Stay tuned for further updates. #artifea #shipping #news #panamacanal #seafreight #oceanfreight
