The FT today provides a valuable review of films that seek to convey a more meaningful account of the impact of the Russo-Ukraine War on the lives of people living in Ukraine. Films cannot replicate the experience of being present in Ukraine to personally witness the violence and impacts on everyday life, but conventional reporting and snapshots on TV can distance people from the reality of the war. So these films go a long way to better communicating the human consequences of this tragedy. Apologies for posting as the article is behind a paywall. I am happy to share that my article, "Past and future wars on TV: High-end drama series and national identity" is out in the latest issue of Journal of Popular Television. Here I discuss how two Norwegian drama series - The Saboteurs and Occupied - draw upon collective memory / cultural imaginations of WW2, albeit in different ways. The final draft was finished before Russia's attack on Ukraine.
