I am so excited to share a new series we have been working on at Corduroy Media. I started Corduroy 20 years ago as a documentary filmmaker - the idea was to create a production company that could produce work for paying clients, that shared the values of #sustainability , #diversity and #socialjustice , while supporting my feature length doc films. Fast forward to today, and we have a powerful and diverse team of 12 fulltime creatives that create powerful work for a wide range of clients across a diverse range of industries and non-profits and a 10K sq ft production facility rooted in #oakland . BUT - this series is something different. For the first time, this self-funded series aligns our goals as creators in a really expansive way that is constantly evolving. Rather than spending several years creating a single feature length film, this series allows us to move fast, release content and build an audience along the way. Live from Mama Dog Studios was first introduced as a concept to me from someone who has become a very close friend. After connecting at a backyard BBQ, local musician, producer and MC Mani Draper walked into my office and pitched a music series to be filmed and produced in our soundstage in #oakland - Mama Dog Studios. After aligning on a deep love of Oakland, Music and Culture - We launched our first content filmed during COVID and just wrapped our 3rd season. Today, Live from Mama Dog Studios has developed into a live community event, or as Mani says: Activation, an online music series and a thought leadership forum. This content is all organized around shared values and the need to uplift, highlight and learn from diverse leaders, musicians and creators. As I look over the content we have produced over the last several months and plan for our next #activation I am filled with Love and Gratitude. When my wife and I moved to Oakland in 2007 I knew I wanted to root my business here and this series exemplifies the reasons why. Without leaders like Mani, the vast community he has cultivated, our crazy talented team at Corduroy and all of the #creators in the bay area and beyond - we would not be where we are today. One important thing to keep in mind is that sometimes, working on personal projects can really boost your creativity and skill. Without the duty to deliver, you can just put your mind to it and experiment with different ideas (even if they suck), but this is the best way to learn.
