Good afternoon, we hope you enjoyed the 4th of July holiday! We are back to business as usual. We've been talking about the state of the industry regarding the transportation of goods and shipment increases/decreases a lot recently. The port of Houston has been in the conversation frequently, as the number of TEUs has been drastically up and down since March of 2023. Now as of May 2024, Port Houston’s container cargo volumes surged 21% in May; while the Port of Corpus Christi, Texas, recorded a 6.7% increase in total shipments. This is an 18% y/y increase in comparison to May of last year. It would seem that a return to market normalcy is becoming more hopeful as time progresses. The latest port volume figures released have shown a marked decrease in containers passing through Southern California Ports compared to 2022 despite the rest of the country experiencing a rebound in volumes. Los Angeles reported a 27% decrease in the number of containers moved in July. Neighbouring Port of Long Beach experienced a similar decline. In contrast the Port of Oakland experienced some of its highest volumes with full TEU up 16.8% last month versus the prior year. Similar increases are being seen in other US ports including the ports of Houston, Georgia and Charleston. Some executives are pointing at the lengthy port negotiations at the West Coast Ports earlier this year encouraged the shifting cargo patterns - what do you think? Some interesting shipping trends to the West Coast -- but can we really be surprised? Obviously as we continue to see disruptions caused by the Houthis in the Red Sea and drought in the Panama Canal, shippers are deciding to divert freight to LA and Oakland. Here are a few things to consider: 1. Fewer available chassis 2. Higher risk of potential fees like demurrage 3. Less certainty of delivery windows These reinforce the need for improved intermodal visibility so you can surface LFDs, manage exceptions, and give your customers greater peace of mind. https://lnkd.in/eqT3F-eJ

“…Providing as much certainty as possible in the logistical supply chain separates the winners from the losers. Logistics companies thrive by providing that certainty.” -- Lori Ann LaRocco with CNBC This is playing out before our eyes at the Port of Los Angeles and the Port of Long Beach. 🚢 Port of LA reported 781,434 TEUs handled in February 2024, which was an increase of 60.2% from the previous year’s numbers in February 2023! 🚢 Port of LB reported 674,723 TEUs in February 2024, which was an increase of 24.1% from the previous year’s numbers in February 2023! 🚢 Together the Ports of LA & LB handled 1,456,157 TEUs, which was a 41.2% increase from February 2023. 🚢 By comparison, The Port Authority of New York & New Jersey handled 667,346 TEUs in January 2024 (February 2024 isn’t available yet) which was only a 3.4% increase from February 2023. 🚢 Georgia Ports Authority (Savannah) did better moving 451,673 TEUs in February 2024, which was a 14.4% increase from February 2023. 🚢 HOUSTON AUTHORITY, PORT OF also improved 19.9% from the previous year, improving 375,965 TEUs from 313,452 TEUs. 🚢 If you combine Ports of New York and New Jersey, Houston and Savannah, these total 1,494,984 TEUs, which is only slightly higher than the Ports of LA & LB by themselves. This is a huge shift from February 2023, when the Ports of LA & LB handled only 1,031,521 TEUs compared to 1,353,675 TEUs at the Ports of New York & New Jersey, Houston and Savannah combined. The shift to the West Coast Ports is real and should continue as we get into shipping season. Don’t forget that 🌀hurricane season🌀 starts June 1, 2024 and the 👷 East Coast & Gulf Coast port labor agreement 👷 expires September 30, 2024. If logistics companies thrive on providing certainty, this shift will continue in 2024. We just need this increased container traffic to translate to warehouse demand in SoCal. This could be coming too . . . #cre #socalindustrial https://lnkd.in/gCBn6kiZ

💪Peak season for the Port of New York and New Jersey has arrived. Not only did the port take the top spot for containers moved in July, but it was the port’s highest monthly total since October 2022. A total of 725,479 TEUs were processed in July. 🇺🇸🇵🇦The U.S. is the largest user of the Panama Canal, with total U.S. commodity export and import containers representing about 73% of Panama Canal traffic. Forty percent of all U.S. container traffic travels through the canal every year, about $270 billion in cargo. U.S. energy and agriculture also use this waterway to transfer goods. #logistics #tradecompliance #supplychain #customsbroker #import #export https://lnkd.in/gYd69U5X

Roger Guenther, executive director at Port Houston, said cargo traffic at the port has remained steady in 2023. “Overall tonnage through midyear 2023 is down 4% when compared to a really remarkable and record-setting 2022,” Guenther said during the port’s monthly commission meeting Tuesday. “The container demand remains very solid through the first half of the year. We’ve handled 1.8 million TEUs across all of our public docks. Loaded exports continue to lead the way in containers with an increase of 12% compared to last year. Loaded imports are only down 7% year to date, which relative to the rest of the country is very good.” Loaded exports were up 1% y/y in June at 103,726 TEUs. Loaded imports were down 7% y/y to 146,636 TEUs.
