Do Job Titles Really Matter? How important are job titles and should we rely on them to define roles in comparison to the skillset? There is a lot of debate around the importance of job titles. Some feel they represent your skills and expertise, and some are of the opinion that they are irrelevant and that it's your accomplishments that define your role. Job titles have obvious relevance in terms of the company hierarchy and being able to accurately determine roles within a business. When considering a new position, one of the main factors that people are concerned with is the job title, which we were always taught to chase. While a title is essential to indicate the level of experience and seniority at the company, both internally and to the external world, focusing too much on it can limit your success. Career Guidance | Training and Instruction | Empowering and Educating Professionals to Support Successful Career Advancement
I've gotten a lot of questions lately from job seekers about whether or not to include an "in-between" job on their resume or bring it up in an interview. They seem to be concerned that a job that is unrelated to their career field of choice, and one that they only took to provide some stability while job searching, could reflect negatively on them. I, personally, feel that the opposite is true, especially in the middle of a challenging job market. You don't need to create a large entry on your resume for this type of role, listing out detailed responsibilities that have nothing to do with your career goals. In fact, you could even just concisely mention it within a "Career Break" entry if you're in the midst of a layoff. But, also, don't be afraid to leverage a position like that to your advantage! This type of a role, even if unrelated to your career goals, can allow you to: 🔷 Emphasize transferable skills that you possess or recently honed that are relevant to your target roles 🔷 Demonstrate how you can quickly pivot to overcome challenges and solve real-world problems 🔷 Show that you are capable of quickly and successfully learning new skills and tasks to be a highly productive contributor 🔷 Highlight your ability to build strong relationships with new team members and provide exceptional levels of service to your customer base It also shows that you were remaining professionally active while simultaneously job searching, which means you can effectively balance a hefty amount of responsibility. Finding the right way to tell your story about this type of "in-between" job can make all the difference. Wear it as a badge of pride and don't be shy about highlighting the ways in which it speaks positively of you and your work ethic! #jobsearch #jobsearchtips

With the fierce competition for new jobs, I'm concerned people are often just looking for a job. Any job that pays them keeps the roof over their head and food on the table. This isn't bad in this current economic climate. But I genuinely believe that if you start thinking long term and try and understand how the role will change in 1,2, or even 3 years, it will help you. Ask yourself questions like: - Is this the right role for me now? - Will it be the right role for me in a year or two? - If I've not been promoted, will it still excite me in three years? It will help you win the interview! You will naturally be more excited by the right vacancy, and it will show. You'll be more likely to be successful in the role, and the business you join will be grateful. Your recruiter will also thank you. #InterviewTip #MakingRecruitmentWork #VCTalent
