Flexport Thank you for standing #WithRefugees!
Your support helps protect and empower the 120 million forcibly displaced people in the world today — giving them hope for a better and brighter future!
One of the things I love about supply chain and logistics, is the tangible impact the movement of goods has; trade has been a driving factor in global economic development, and an essential element for the provision of lifesaving supplies to communities in crisis. But the transportation of goods comes at an environmental cost, one that we are all becoming more aware of with the increase in climate related extreme weather events.
This World Refugee Day Flexport is highlighting the impact the transport industry has on the climate, and the impact a changing climate has on some of the world's most vulnerable populations.
There is a growing drive for alternative fuel development, in order to ensure that trade can continue, while reducing it's climate impact. It's exciting to see what opportunities are available now, which technologies are in development, and organizations working together to drive adoption for a cleaner industry.

Title: Nurturing Sustainable Solutions: "Call for Ongoing Humanitarian Aid in Iraq"
In the realm of humanitarian efforts, the importance of sustainability cannot be overstated. As we navigate global challenges, it's crucial to recognize the role sustainable solutions play in ensuring long-term well-being, especially in regions like Iraq facing multifaceted issues.
Humanitarian projects have made strides in addressing crises and providing aid. Yet, true success lies in establishing sustainable systems empowering communities to thrive independently. Iraq, with a history of conflict, underscores the need for sustained intervention.
Climate change adds urgency. Alarming readings emphasize the evolution of humanitarian efforts to encompass environmental sustainability. Iraq faces climate-induced disasters, requiring a shift towards holistic, sustainable development integrating environmental considerations.
To direct donor attention, emphasize the long-term benefits of supporting projects fostering self-reliance. Sustainable solutions include renewable energy, water resource management, and community-based resilience programs. These contribute to environmental conservation, empowering local populations, reducing the risk of future crises.
Donors shape project trajectories. Advocate for a shift, encouraging them to view Iraq as a partner in a journey toward sustainable development. Redirect funding towards projects prioritizing long-term impact to break the cycle of dependency.
Engage in open dialogue about climate change and its implications. Building awareness fosters understanding of the need for sustained intervention. The importance of sustainability in humanitarian projects is clear. As we confront challenges posed by climate change, reframe the narrative, advocating for continued, targeted intervention in Iraq. By fostering sustainable solutions, we address immediate crises, building a resilient foundation for communities to thrive. Together, with a shared commitment to sustainability, we can make a lasting impact, ensuring a brighter, more resilient future for all

Natural protected areas, community-based natural and cultural resource management, international and cross-border cooperation, eco-tourism. LOVING NATURE. LOVING LIFE.
Nature is staging a comeback: UN recognizes seven World Restoration Flagships.
The UN Environment Programme (UNEP) and the Food and Agriculture Organization of the UN (FAO) have named seven initiatives from Africa, Latin America, the Mediterranean, and South Asia as UN World Restoration Flagships:
· From Fires to Forests – Resilience in the Mediterranean
· Living Indus – Restoring a Cradle of Civilizations
· Acción Andina: Saving a global water and climate hotspot
· Sri Lanka stopped planting mangroves and started growing them
· Terai Arc Landscape: Reviving Asia’s mega-fauna
· Regreening Africa’s agriculture
· Growing forests in Africa's drylands: African farmers transforming food systems
The World Restoration Flagship awards are part of the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration which aims to prevent, halt, and reverse the degradation of ecosystems on every continent and in every ocean.

Regreening Africa is now a UN World Restoration Flagship!
...and hence officially "one of the best examples of ongoing, large-scale and long-term ecosystem restoration in the world".
Immensely proud of the fruits from this work carried out since 2017 by CIFOR-ICRAF, World Vision Australia, Catholic Relief Services, CARE, Sahel Eco, and Oxfam - with core funding from the European Union.
UN Environment Programme Executive Director Inger Andersen said it best: “Over half of productive lands in Africa are degraded, with climate change exacerbating this challenge. The good news is restoration works and can bring major benefits to communities – from supporting smallholder famers to helping raise household incomes. As people begin to quickly recognize the benefits of ecosystem restoration, it makes perfect sense to extend regreening practices to more lands and kickstart a renaissance of nature.”

In the heart of Africa, where the rich tapestry of landscapes hides untold treasures that benefit the globe, the lifeblood of progress—our transportation systems—struggles under the weight of adversity. In the Democratic Republic of Congo, a nation blessed with unparalleled mineral wealth, the veins of road, water, air, and rail transport are stifled by the shadows of conflict, unfair trade, and a history woven with oppression. The journey toward economic transformation and poverty eradication is impeded, not by a lack of resilience within the African spirit, but by the scars of wars, illicit dealings, and the echoes of cololonial injustices. As we stand at the crossroads of compassion, let us unite to mend the broken links that shackle these vital arteries of progress. Together, through shared understanding, support, and a commitment to justice, we can empower Africa to forge a brighter future—one where the wheels of opportunity turn freely, connecting a continent to its true potential.
The perilous journey along the Congo River unveils a harsh reality where survival hinges on the edge. As thousands embark on this month-long odyssey, the once-cargo ship transforms into a vessel of desperation, navigating treacherous waters that claim lives yearly. A floating refugee camp, its decks overflow with humanity, each soul yearning for a chance at reaching major cities. The "Ship of Hell" echoes with the cries of those trapped in its cramped confines. Limited space, murky waters teeming with hazards, and the constant threat of pirates compound the hardships. On this maritime ordeal, the journey itself is a gamble, a precarious dance with fate. The absence of basic amenities magnifies the struggle — a single toilet for 1,700 people, makeshift solutions for waste disposal, and the challenge of securing clean water. Every aspect underscores the urgent need for intervention, turning a spotlight on the dire conditions faced by those relying on this lifeline. In the year 2024, this tale serves as a stark reminder that progress must extend beyond borders, transcending the seas of neglect. The call is clear: to transform this harrowing journey into one of hope, safety, and dignity for all.
In light of the Congo River's perilous journey, we stand witness to a humanitarian crisis that demands our collective intellect, empathy, and urgent action. The 'Ship of Hell' underscores the stark reality faced by thousands, as they navigate treacherous waters in pursuit of life's essentials. This endemic hardship calls for intellectual advocacy and a resolute call to action. Let us challenge the status quo, demanding international attention and collaborative efforts to redefine the narrative of the vulnerable. A multidimensional approach is imperative, our intellectual capacity must be harnessed to engineer solutions that dismantle the systemic challenges plaguing this vital lifeline. #sdgs#innovations#solutions#invest

Did you know that the natural environment, like civilians, is also protected under the 1949 Geneva Convention for Armed Conflict?
According to Saeed Bagheri
Article 35(3) prohibits the use of “methods or means of warfare which are intended, or may be expected, to cause widespread, long-term and severe damage to the natural environment.”
and
Article 55(1) provides that “care shall be taken in warfare to protect the natural environment against widespread, long-term, and severe damage.

The humanitarian crisis in Gaza breaks my heart and insenses me that the laws set up in 1949 to protect civilians are not being respected or upheld.
Furthermore, aerial footage shows the destruction of green spaces, traditional farms and ancient trees.

This is exacerbating starvation as it impedes the ability of people to feed themselves.
When a ceasefire does occur, it is not just buildings that need rebuilding but also biodiversity and agriculture.
And of course, counselling and therapy.
I am committing that all future Sustainable Sidekicks 2024 workshops, will donate money to Palestinian humanitarian and environmental charities in Gaza to support people and the environment, as the two are not separate.
And let's not forget about the people, animals and ecology suffering due to further conflicts in Sudan, Yemen, Haiti, Ukraine, Myanmar to name a few.
