For those who have spent considerable time working onboard, the transition to shore-based roles may seem like a natural progression, but it comes with its own set of difficulties. I am going to elaborate on the hurdles faced by individuals that I speak to in the industry making this shift and how they can navigate through these challenges. Cultural Shift: Working onboard a cruise ship creates a distinctive lifestyle that involves close-knit communities, shared living spaces, and a constant sense of adventure. Transitioning to a shore-based position often means leaving behind this vibrant, dynamic atmosphere for a more traditional office environment. Adjusting to the change in culture and pace can be daunting for those accustomed to the ever-changing seascape. Skill Diversification: Onboard roles in the cruise industry often demand a specific set of skills tailored to the maritime environment. Moving ashore may require individuals to diversify their skill set to meet the demands of a more administrative or managerial position. This shift can be challenging, particularly for those who have honed their expertise in a specific maritime discipline. Limited Networking Opportunities: Onboard staff build strong professional networks within the cruise industry, forming connections with colleagues from diverse backgrounds. Transitioning to shore-based roles may limit these networking opportunities, requiring individuals to establish new connections in unfamiliar territories. Building a network in the corporate world demands a different approach and set of skills. Career Path Uncertainty: Unlike the clear hierarchical structure onboard, shore-based roles in the cruise industry can offer a less defined career path. Individuals may find themselves navigating through various departments and responsibilities, requiring adaptability and a proactive approach to career development. Time Away from the Sea: For those who have grown fond of the sea, transitioning to a shore-based role means spending less time on the water. The absence of the sea breeze and the rhythmic rocking of the ship can be a poignant adjustment for individuals who have found solace in the maritime environment. "Does Flight Centre Travel Group have opportunities for growth and career progression?" A question that I get asked almost daily by my candidates, and one that I am always excited to answer. Ginny wearing multiple hats and taking the opportunity to use her amazing way with words to help our Communications team with the Flight Centre Foundation pages internally and externally. For myself, starting off as a novice Travel Consultant back in 2019, seeing Covid through in my first year, and finally ending up in the BOF I had from day one (Recruitment) back in 2022. I don't think LinkedIn's word limit would allow me to go on and on for all 18 of us, so trust me when I say the list goes on... Two years on, still loving this role and not yet thinking about what is next, I have been able to see through other BOF opportunities, like taking on different brands in my recruitment portfolio, joining different projects to have my opinions and ideas heard and executed alongside high-level leaders, taking advantage of some of our amazing professional development courses provided free of change by our Learning & Development team... I could go on and on about the opportunities I have been able to take advantage of to better myself professionally and personally. The advice that I have been given by Flighties before me, and the advice that I would give to anyone who joins FCTG - JUST SAY YES when (not if) these opportunities come your way.
