American Airlines is making another major move that seemingly leaves much of the travel agency and advisor community out in the cold. American on Tuesday announced that starting on May 1, travelers booking through non-preferred travel agencies will not be able to earn miles and loyalty points. Becoming a preferred agency with American Airlines in 2024 comes with specific criteria: 1. Being on a 2024 incentive agreement issued by American. 2. Fulfilling all New Distribution Capability (NDC) adoption requirements. 3. Serving island communities is a full-time, year-round job: ask any of our team today as we battle through snow and ice, high winds and some really rather grotty conditions, doing our utmost to support everything ranging from hospital trips to mail and newspaper deliveries. Many islands rely on Loganair for all this and more, just as we rely on them for our business - whether that be throughout Scotland or the Isle of Man. It is a commitment that we take seriously - and one which I sincerely hope is recognised, most especially in the Isle of Man. You see, for the next two days (Tuesday and Wednesday), our competitor easyJet has not a single flight to and from the Isle of Man. Not one flight. To anywhere. Nothing. Beware the true price of low-cost flights - they might be much in evidence on a Friday during June, yet this is the time of year when having an airline with locally-based aircraft, crews and engineers really comes into its own. It doesn't stop there. easyJet has recently pulled its summer Saturday flights between mid June and late August from both the Manchester-Isle of Man and Manchester-Jersey routes. The reason? It's decided to add an extra flight between Manchester and the Greek holiday island of Mykonos, where it can presumably make more money for its holidays division than flying to the Isle of Man. It's really not a great message as to where you figure in their list of priorities. And so if you're making a booking for travel this summer and Loganair is fortunate to win your custom, please do remember that you're directly supporting year-round air services and local jobs for your community when you book with us. I was a little taken aback to see this image from the terminal windows recently. But given this performance, I am beginning to wonder if easyJet should just paint this message on the front of all of its 'planes, not only this one. My latest story takes a look at recent changes American Airlines is making to its frequent-flier program. Starting July 11, travelers will only earn AAdvantage miles and loyalty points for American flights if they book either with the airline directly, or through a partner carrier or a preferred travel agency. It’s part of American’s fight to get travel agencies to adopt modern booking technology. The new policy comes on the heel of other recent changes. Last year, American ditched traditional award charts for flight redemptions in favor of fully dynamic pricing for award flights. And in 2021, American upended how status was earned through the AAdvantage program entirely. American’s efforts are part of a broader movement across the airline industry to re-evaluate the role of frequent-flier programs. The changes have stoked concerns among some travelers that their hard-earned rewards are being devalued, but American fans say their rewards still allow them to traverse the globe.
