Achieving a 1.5° pathway will require actions that extend beyond the farm throughout the value chain. This includes reducing food loss and waste, adopting dietary shifts, and adapting how we use arable land - actions that are all critical to #decarbonization. Analysis from WBCSD – World Business Council for Sustainable Development, the Food and Land Use Coalition (FOLU), and We Mean Business Coalition shows that the food and agriculture sector can mitigate up to as much as 9 gigatonnes of carbon dioxide equivalent (GtCO2e) annually. That would amount to almost half of food system emissions globally by 2030 — and it can be achieved by reducing emissions from agriculture, protecting nature, increasing on-farm carbon capture and storage, and shifting demand from emissions-intensive commodities. Addressing the pivotal role of food systems, which contribute over 30% of global emissions, the initiative leverages collective demand to accelerate the adoption of sustainable farming practices. The emphasis on aggregating demand for low-carbon agricultural commodities underscores a strategic approach to achieving the goals of the Paris Agreement and limiting global warming. By uniting corporate champions from multinational and regional companies, with a combined revenue of US$2.1tn, the coalition seeks to wield substantial procurement power, targeting a combined value of US$10-20bn for eco-friendly commodities. Manny Maceda's perspective, as CEO and chairman of the Board of Bain & Company, highlights the transformative impact the coalition aims to have on how companies procure agricultural products. Breaking it down, Mckinsey’s new report suggests it will require action in a few key areas: reducing food loss and waste, adopting dietary shifts, and adapting how we use arable land.
