Have you seen The New York Times article on the Thompson #wildfire? The article offers interesting insights on how quickly wildfires exceed our abilities to control them. Pyregence models are the backbone of the First Street models referenced in the original post.
This piece on the Thompson #wildfire in the The New York Times highlights just how fast wildfires can get out of control. Out of curiosity, I went back to the First Street wildfire model data and found that zip code 95966 in the Oroville, CA area is in the 99.9th percentile of our "expected annual structures destroyed" metric. To be ranked this high in our model, an area has to have extreme wildfire risk in the underlying burn probability map and a sizable community of properties close by with vulnerable building characterisitcs. Hoping for a relatively quick containment and as little destruction as possible, but unfortunately we've seen these events increasingly impact residential communities and the models don't show that trend slowing down over the next few decades. https://lnkd.in/eXMZHxZe

Team Rubicon Myth #3: Our volunteers ONLY do good work AFTER disasters happen! This is not true - our volunteers do amazing work AFTER disasters, but they also do a lot of work to BEFORE, to mitigate disasters. In 2018, the National Institute of Building Sciences (NIBS) reported that every $1 spent on disaster mitigation by three federal agencies saves society $6. So Team Rubicon is committed to reducing suffering BEFORE, during, and after disasters and crises. Take a couple of minutes to watch the video below of a recently completed fire mitigation operation to see how TR's Greyshirts (volunteers) use the same skills that we use to cut trees and clear debris after a tornado or hurricane, to stop a fire from destroying a community. And support our mission. This story of stopping a fire from reaching a community (or that of building a resilient house, training community members to respond, training exercises....) may not get media attention, but we do it because we want to prevent the media from reporting a family's tragedy. We can't stop a hurricane, but perhaps we can protect a community from fires! Make a contribution to training more volunteers, supporting our mission with essential donations, or join our team as a volunteer at www.teamrubiconusa.org #BuiltToServe #AnOunceOfPrevention #Resilience #Community https://lnkd.in/gtqhaCHJ

🔥 The #ParkFire now CA’s 5th largest wildfire on record 🔥 This record is sobering but doesn’t capture the enormous amount of hardwork by the over 5,500 firefighters and first responders on the frontlines. #5 doesn’t count the structures destroyed and those saved. It doesn’t capture the human and environmental impacts by the fire. Measuring the size of a wildfire is important, but there is so much to the story. Our Public Information/Communications Team works hard to get all those numbers out as quickly as possible. The latest stats can be found at www.fire.ca.gov Be sure you’re prepared for wildfire by visiting our website: www.ReadyForWildfire.org #CALFIRE Joe Tyler Anale Burlew Nick Schuler, CFO, PIO Christine McMorrow
