Why would a person pay a substantial amount for a good if they could get it for a really low price... or even for free? That's the question that Jer Rei Teo and I, two penultimate Economics students, set out to explore in our Independent Study Course under NUS College. Pay-What-You-Want is a pricing model that involves consumers being able to pay any amount they wish for a good, including zero. We set out to conduct a supervised research into social variables that affect one's payment amount. This was a major leap in our independent research experience as we conducted surveys and field interviews, applied our knowledge of Stata into analysing real-life data, and used the data to draw substantiated conclusions and interpretations. Presenting our semester's worth of work today was a bittersweet experience as I reflected on the lessons I have learned throughout this process. Thanks to this project, I have gained even more interest in behavioural insights, an area I strongly wish to explore in my career of market research. As I aim to further hone relevant skills to pivot into this path, I'd like to thank my teammate Jer Rei, as well as our supervisor, Dr. Joel Chow, for being a truly significant part of this valuable journey.

Creative & Marketing Manager | Film & Advertising, Digital Media, Strategic Planning, Campaign Management, Emerging Technologies, Team Leadership | Passion for Cutting-Edge Creative and Innovative Storytelling
A year of a 34 year old The London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE) graduate. Long, but entertaining post alert! For all you LinkedIn connoisseurs, I promise you a fresh, minimal academic insight post! After working for 12+ years in the entertainment & advertising industry in almost every creative and production job possible (my first project was shot on film!!!) and working with the top stars and technicians and brands across multiple countries, I thought LSE would be a welcome break. It was more like a gut punch and I am forever grateful. What I didn’t realise is how much being in a system can streamline thought patterns to a distinct boundary. What LSE did for me was challenge and break every wall, boundary, comfort zone and perspective I had of life and people. Being a voracious reader of all things cinema and advertising, I assumed I’ll do more of that in a global way here, what I did was learn in depth about media power, dynamics, politics, representation, data & privacy, contemporary issues in policies, understanding global audiences, for media’s horizon touches vast expanses and After all, what’s cinema if not exploring different stories from different worlds? Studying in a prestigious global institution brings with it global perspectives. With students (future thought leaders) around the globe in every seminar, ages ranging from 21 to 55, I learnt so much from their perspectives. It’s fascinating to hear ideas and angles from people who work in industries and countries I’d never worked in or had the opportunity to visit. I came out of every seminar/interaction learning so much about approaching a topic from so many different angles and how THERE ARE SO MANY RIGHT ANSWERS. Coming to my life, I was managing life until I came to LSE. I don’t remember the last time I went searching for work, friends, attended a career fair or interacted with so many industries at a regular interval. I just had to manage what and who came to me, travel constantly and trust me, that was a 25 hour job. LSE reintroduced me to creating life. Making friends, part-time work hunting (a separate post on this soon) and attending events for insight and meeting media veterans from jobs I didn’t know existed, from pretty much all over the world… the inner work that went into doing all of this from a ‘sorted’ 34 year life was unsettling to say the least. But I have to thank LSE for giving me a safe space to do anything and everything I wanted. Coming to my age, I was also the “Mature Student Representative” of a beautiful, eclectic bunch of people like me who had little to no memory of how being a student was!!! It was always so entertaining and relaxing to organise catch ups to checking in on unprofessional students like me who were reorienting and reinventing themselves like me, catching life one day at a time. Exciting news to share with my LinkedIn network! I have successfully completed my Spring 2024 semester with As and Bs for my MS in Economics at Georgia Institute of Technology. Despite a challenging semester, I'm most proud of my hard-earned grades in Econometrics II and Machine Learning. In recognition of my dedication and hard work in economics, I am honored to be selected as the 2024 Joseph K. Heyman Graduate Scholarship recipient through The Atlanta Economics Club. This is my second time receiving the award, having previously been awarded as an undergraduate recipient 7 years ago. The award ceremony, which celebrated market trends around electric vehicles, was held at the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta. Today marks my graduation from the United Way of Greater Atlanta Volunteer Involvement Program, where I achieved my fundraising goal and honed my skills as an effective board member in the nonprofit space. Currently, I'm pursuing my summer semester, taking classes in Money and Capital Markets, and Regression Analysis through the Industrial Engineering school at GT. Additionally, I'm doing research work as an Economic Research Intern at the Metro Atlanta Chamber of Commerce, where I hope to connect my work with my Summer Research Assistantship project on the impact of robotics and AI on supply chain resiliency. I'm grateful to everyone who has supported me on this journey and excited to see what the future holds as I continue my search for work and finish school. #opentowork #graduatestudent #economics #economy #economist

Finding managerial relevant, societal impactful and creative research ideas is a struggle for many PhD students early in their academic career. Some will find it difficult to find the right research question for their PhD, others will stop ideating after their first idea, and some will have many ideas but do not know which one to select. Ideation tools can help researchers to come with more and better research ideas. By the end of this seminar, participants will generate about 5 research ideas to discuss with their advisors and present them in a standardized format. The seminar will train academics in ideation tools that have proven their value in companies, governments and academic institutions for 20+ years, adapted to the specific context of generating impactful research ideas for young scholars.
🌼May is coming up and the (online) EDEN Doctoral Seminar on Generating Managerially & Societally Impactful Research Ideas (4th ed.) is a fascinating opportunity for early career academics and young PhDs❕ 💻This seminar will take place over a period of *2 weeks* and participants will be given ➕extra assignments and ⌛time to work on their💡ideas! Give it a try! 🔎 Online 📅 May 15th, 16th 22nd and 23rd, 2024 ℹ More info: https://lnkd.in/eAaduPWN 👉 Application deadline: April 10, 2024 👈 Elio Keko, Elke Cabooter, Stefan Stremersch #impactful #research #earlycareerresearchers #phd #phdstudents #phdlife #academia #business #creativity #idea
