We’ve had action packed days at The Consumer Goods Forum Summit. What a privilege it is to support collaboration between retailers and manufacturers on key societal topics, such as sustainability, healthier eating, plastics and human rights. Yesterday, Dirk Van de Put and I kicked off the Summit by sharing the progress we've made in the past year, going 'from a moment to a movement'. We’ve already seen strong momentum, such as with 34 members, representing ten percent of the global plastic packaging consumption. These members have signed up for at least one of the nine Golden Design Rules to make packaging more recyclable. Not forgetting there's still enough work ahead of us during our second year as Co-Chairs. Then, we dived into the key topics immediately, with a DE&I lunch together with Colleen Wegman, CEO of Wegmans, and led by Allyson Zimmermann, CEO of LEAD Network Europe. The conversation is already a Summit highlight. Colleen blew us away by sharing that the division men/women at Wegmans is 50/50 at all levels. Inspiring and it underscores the importance of our own ambitions. There is much more to come this week, such as the voices from the next generation with Bite Back 2030, on the need for better access to healthy and affordable foods for all generations, a dive-in session on Forest Positive and a presentation on the Northern Stars in Retail. #AholdDelhaize #ConsumerGoodsForum #CGF #fromamomenttoamovement #progress

Circular Economy roundtable for the “Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar” meets #JohnDeere. Very impressive dimensions and a place to re-visit with my kids. 😉. In this 6th meeting of the roundtable, we discussed three hands-on topics: ♻ Wooden and plastic palette repair and recycling to improve circularity in logistics: How to deal with contamination in palettes re-use? What logistic providers offer a full service including repair? And can economy of scale be realized by pooling the waste streams? The question will be continued with experts. ☁ CO2 trading platform for the Metropolregion Rhein-Neckar: Taking this year’s The Hackathon Company Guinness World Records attempt in #Mannheim as trigger, we discussed how we can contribute to the topic “decarbonize the planet” as well as benefit from the event in our city. ♻ Washroom paper recycling One of our members, Essity, is providing a solution for this issue, many companies deal with and #JohnDeere is already applying. The key is to involve all employees and continuously train staff because, as always in recycling, the purer the waste streams, the higher the recycling rate and potential for closed loops. A good but not simple measure engage employees for circularity! Many thanks to our hosts Daniel Sigmund and Khaled Jubeh from #JohnDeere and my co-organizor Klaus Kirr. We are very much looking forward to our next meeting at #MVVEnergieAG. Let’s close more circles in our region in 2024! ESSA hosted a panel session at International Confex this week called '𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐂𝐡𝐚𝐢𝐧 – 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐒𝐚𝐛𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐮𝐫 𝐨𝐫 𝐒𝐮𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐞𝐫?' Chaired by ESSA Director Andrew Harrison and joined by Jennifer Bishopp, Karl Dukes, Oliver Smart and Lisa Tyson, the session focussed on why singling out certain parts of the supply chain is not the answer to a sustainable future in the #eventsindustry, as doing so prevents us from achieving sustainable goals as quickly as we would like. So, what does need to happen? Work to a robust framework, be part of continual collective discussions and continually seek new and improved alternatives. The blanket removal and banning of certain items is simply not the right approach as too often this mindset is not based on the facts. What else? Change the narrative. Stop viewing the supply chain as the ‘problem child’ when it is actually part of the solution. Sustainable practices will work best when we understand and value each other’s roles and e͟a͟c͟h incorporate new practices effectively. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐒𝐒𝐀 𝐒𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐢𝐧𝐚𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐀𝐜𝐜𝐫𝐞𝐝𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 takes an in-depth look at a companies’ sustainability policies, management and processes, providing a framework to work towards.
