Lots of posts going around about the Live Nation/Ticketmaster DOJ lawsuit so I thought I'd chime in as someone who has either worked for or very close to TM and LN for 25+ years. I will preface this by saying that LNTM is a great company with lots of great people and personal friends and I hope for their sake that the company remains intact, but there are certainly some business practices the company uses or has used that I don't agree with personally. The business models of Live Nation as venues/promoter and Ticketmaster are very different. Their merger was a result of their core businesses being synergistic and in parallel. A good chunk of both companies' revenue was intertwined. It made sense. Smart business move. Not anti-competitive. However; the way Live Nation then proceeded to behave was by leveraging their promotion business against other venues and ticketing companies by only booking shows in TM-ticketed venues. New venues were "strongly" urged to use TM as their ticketing platform. I witnessed this first-hand. Anti-competitive? Remains to be seen. It's important to also understand that Live Nation views ticket sales as a wash on their bottom line. Because they own their venues (concession/merch/parking/suites etc) and the ticketing (fees), they don't need to rely on ticket sale revenue. They pay artists simply to put butts in seats. Thus, they have been able to give artists almost un-matchable offers to play their venues. Essentially, 95% to 100% of gross sales. Very difficult for other promoters/venues. Obviously, LNTM is highly motivated to generate maximum ticketing fee revenue. Anti-competitive? Remains to be seen. Also important to understand is that Ticketmaster is at it's core a for-profit commodities exchange/marketplace. The commodity is tickets. TM makes money on fees which are based on a percentage of the ticket price. The higher the sale price, the more TM makes in fees. And they receive incremental and re-curring revenue on fees when the tickets are re-sold on the platform. Essentially, the higher the ticket prices and the greater re-sale activity, the more money TM (and Live Nation) makes. As a profit-seeking business in a capital market, why would you do anything other than encourage this? Anti-competitive? Remains to be seen. Think about this: if the tickets are priced too low, they will likely be re-sold resulting in more fee revenue. The more re-sale of the same ticket, the more revenue. Further; when real fans get tickets in the primary onsale, they are more likely to NOT re-sell them. So doesn't it make sense as a business to want the tickets to get to people who DO want to re-sell them? Publicly-traded companies are beholden to shareholders to hit their growth projections and profit increases after all. Will breaking up LNTM result in lower ticket prices for fans? Remains to be seen. Will the DOJ win the lawsuit. I don't think so personally. But it remains to be seen.

Live Nation is aggressively taking control of the festival market. In its latest move, it purchased Dreamland in Margate, a 15,000 cap amusement park turned live venue which is licensed to host up to 40 events per year. As venues struggle to stay open due to rising operating costs and the cost of living crisis, cash-rich live event operator Live Nation has space to take the advantage. Buy purchasing festival sites, it controls pricing, ticketing, event promotion and now the venue - deepening its power in the live events market. Live Nation owns Ticketmaster, which in October 2023 introduced surge ticket pricing. Surge pricing is where the price of a ticket increases according to demand - like budget airfares do but in this case more extremely. This means that fans will end up spending their already impacted entertainment budget in far fewer places. Buying up flagship venues and festivals, whilst also controlling how entertainment budgets are spent, is an audacious strategy. Independent live-event service providers will find it tough to survive in this marketplace. And there’s likely further acquisitions and market consolidation to come. If core small events and venues aren’t supported it will lead to fewer intimate gigs in venues and fewer spaces for new talent and seed musicians to emerge. #livemusic #festivals #musicindustry #musicindustrynews #livenation

CTS Eventim Revenue Up 39% in First Half of 2023 - https://lnkd.in/gHjSAgdf - German concert promoter CTS Eventim says successful tours by Herbert Grönemeyer, Hans Zimmer and P!nk led an “encouraging” first half of 2023 and provide “a cause for optimism” in the second half of the year. Six-month revenue increased 39% to 1.02 billion euros ($1.1 billion at the average exchange rate in the period), marking the first time CTS exceeded 1 billion euros for any six-month period, the company announced Thursday (Aug. 24). Earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) also rose 39% to 170.8 million euros ($185 million).  Looking ahead, CTS Eventim’s leadership expects both full-year revenue and EBITDA to increase compared to 2022. Pre-sales for Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour were the company’s “absolute top seller for the current year” and will hit the company’s third-quarter financial statements, according to the earnings press release. CTS Eventim’s live entertainment segment posted revenue of 751 million euros ($812 million), up 39% from the prior-year period, and EBITDA of 48.5 million euros ($52 million), a 21% increase. About 50 million euros ($54 million) of that revenue came from the United States, where CTS Eventim launched a partnership with promoter Michael Cohl in 2020.  Ticketing revenue increased 41% to 284.6 million euros ($308 million) and normalized EBITDA improved 48% to 122.3 million euros ($132 million) due to “a broad range and large number of successful events and tours,” primarily in Germany, Italy and Austria. The company sold 34.3 million web tickets in the first half of the year, 6.4 million more than the prior-year period. Shares of CTS Eventim dropped 1.1% to 58.35 euros ($63.07) on Thursday. The redevelopment of the Camp Nou represents a massive project. Anyone who has worked behind the scenes there will understand how dated the stadium is. The Hospitality element, given the limited present opportunities, will offer considerable incremental revenue to the Club and be a key element of the financing. Whilst we often look at the building cost of a stadium on a per seat basis it’s important to look at the cost per seat in the individual stands. The reality is that it tends to be that the operational and corporate facilities are often in one stand and it is the cost per seat in this stand and the incremental revenues that come from that stand that is the key to funding.

Dusting off my ticketing hat, here's what you should know about Live Nation Entertainment / Ticketmaster getting sued by the government: * The government created this. In 2009, the Justice Department approved a merger that led to...exactly what they're saying happened now. That wasn't really all that long ago, and it was pretty obvious at the time where this would go. The DOJ knew this, made a stern face at both companies and made them promise not to misbehave if they approved the deal. * Breaking up TM and LN won't affect consumers the way you might imagine it will. Neither fees nor ticket prices are driven by TM/LN's "monopoly" power. I could write a whole piece about that, but I've already written that piece a half dozen times over the years so...pass. * A breakup would create changes inside the industry. Some new opportunities will shake loose for smaller competitors. Independent venues might have a little more leverage. The market for paying acts will change in some ways that are a little hard to foresee. * The two parts of the organization probably should be broken up. No good can come of the biggest promoter and one of the biggest venue owners and the biggest ticketing system living under the same roof. If the breakup happens, expect Ticketmaster to grow faster and be more profitable on its own. I'll let you figure that one out yourself. Why should you want the make entertainment the destination? When you decide to make entertainment the destination and enhance your venue with live entertainment, it can have a profound effect on your business and allow you to see a fantastic return on your investment. Live entertainment automatically creates an energy in a venue that can't be replicated by recorded tracks or other forms of entertainment. It energises the space and engages the audience, making your establishment more appealing and memorable. If your entertainment is marketed correctly, it can lead to an increase in footfall. People are often drawn to venues that offer live entertainment, whether it's a band, comedian, or other performers. And this can also lead to longer stays and an increase in spend per head. So yes, while there are costs associated with booking live entertainment, venues can generate revenue through ticket sales, cover charges, merchandise sales, and increased food and beverage sales. Successful events can be financially lucrative and help sustain your operations. Overall, live entertainment adds value to venues by creating memorable experiences and these experiences create memories which are what will bring people back time and time again, increasing customer satisfaction, driving revenue, and differentiating your venue from your competitors. One of the most common problems I have seen working ticketing/box office for events are people buying from a third party. This runs the chance of people being over charged or even worse one ticket being sold to multiple attendees. This is a problem not only for our bigger venues, but also our independent venues. The article below does a fantastic job discussing this issue and the effect it has on not only the venues in themselves, but the economy that these venues are a part of. “When people buy a ticket to a small venue, the economic impact of $1 spent on a ticket actually equals $12 in local economic impact." - meaning that when tickets are bought, we see an increase in hotel bookings, Uber/Lyft fair, more heads in restaurants.....I mean you get the point. “If you buy a ticket for $200, that should have cost $80, that’s $120 that people don’t have to go to the next show.” If we don't have people coming to the next show, we lose the increase of revenue in our economy as a whole. Being from the city of New Orleans, a home of music - can you see how these scalpers and robots cause a huge risk to culture alone?
