The intersection of fashion and sustainability is a complex one, and from my observations, it's clear that the industry has yet to find an effective strategy for widespread change. The outdated structures of our industry and its supply chains are significant obstacles to achieving true eco-friendliness. However, a potential solution could lie in refining our approach to align more closely with the principle of producing what people genuinely want, informed by real data and feedback. This concept essentially aims to harmonize supply with demand within the fashion sector. The urgency for such a shift is underscored by the vast volumes of returned products and unsold stock that end up being concealed, incinerated, or conveniently shipped off to other countries. Achieving a system where production meets actual demand could usher in a new era of sustainability in fashion like we've never seen before. The tools and technologies required for this transformation, particularly the advent of artificial intelligence in the fashion industry, are already within our grasp. The challenge lies in how businesses can scale these solutions to effect substantial change from a granular level. While monumental achievements don't happen overnight—Rome wasn't built in a day, after all—even small, incremental adjustments can pave the way for meaningful and lasting sustainability in the fashion industry. #fashion #sustainability #freelance #tech

The disconnect between fashion's ongoing quest for sustainability and the success of fast fashion giants like Shein is real. Most of the industry is scrambling to find sustainability solutions that actually work and can coexist with large YoY growth goals, which is part of the reason success has been elusive. Making more items, selling more to customers faster and more often is not a retail model that can support real sustainability. Brands that want to achieve growth while working to actually become more sustainable and reduce waste need to focus on margin/merchandising, product quality and their customer experience. The long term success of creating real value for your customers will take your brand much further than trying to compete with fast fashion models.
