In the excitement surrounding offshore wind farm development, the importance of onshore transmission networks is often overlooked. Ensuring sufficient transmission infrastructure is in place and finding sustainable ways of connecting to the grid can be more significant than generating cleaner energy in the first place. This potential roadblock to offshore wind development has already been well-documented in the U.S. Three new transmission systems aim to tackle this problem head-on. 1️⃣ The first plan will bring power generated by North Coast offshore wind farms to California. With the first Californian floating offshore wind farms predicted to generate power around 2034, the new transmission system would, in the short term, significantly contribute to the state's goal of utilising more than 85 GW of clean energy. 2️⃣ A second new transmission plan, The Garden State Energy Path, aims to deliver electricity generated by four offshore wind farms to New Jesery's grid, helping the state towards its goal of 11 GW of offshore wind production by 2040. 3️⃣ A third transmission plan could see offshore wind power connected directly to the New York City transmission system, delivering as much as 810 GW of clean energy to homes and businesses via the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal. https://lnkd.in/efHdvc8p #USoffshorewind #Californiaoffshore #NewJerseyoffshore #USrenewables #USoffshore

The landscape of offshore wind generating capacity in the United States is undergoing significant changes following the cancellation of two major projects in New Jersey last year, putting the total capacity under construction or planned in flux. As of May, there were a reported 7,200 megawatts (MW) of offshore wind capacity, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration’s (EIA) latest Preliminary Monthly Electric Generator Inventory. However, 2,400 MW worth of projects have been canceled since December, while 4,800 MW remain active and are in various stages of development. In late 2023, developer Orsted canceled its 2,400-MW Ocean Wind 1 and 2 projects in New Jersey, attributing the decision to rising interest rates, high inflation, and supply chain delays. Read the article at E&E News, “California unveils $4.6B transmission plan for offshore wind,” by Heather Richards—April 8, 2024. “California’s main grid operator wants to spend more than $4.5 billion to upgrade the state’s transmission system for offshore wind, underscoring a nationwide shift toward major investments in grid expansion. The California Independent System Operator released a $6.1 billion draft plan last week to prep the Golden State’s power system for clean energy. The largest tranche of funding — $4.59 billion — would be devoted to wires and infrastructure that would carry offshore wind power from the state’s isolated northern coast toward hubs of demand like San Francisco… The California ISO said the plan would meet a “rapid escalation” in renewable power as the state works to build a carbon-neutral grid by 2045… “Major transmission upgrades are complex and require a significant upfront investment,” Neil Millar, California ISO’s vice president for infrastructure and operations planning, said in a statement. “It’s crucial that we do all we can to synchronize all of our planning and resource procurement so we can get these transmission lines planned.”… The plan mirrors an attempt nationwide to more than double the country’s decades-old network of power lines to support cleaner sources of energy than fossil-fueled power plants — and to meet President Joe Biden’s goal of achieving a carbon-free grid by 2035. Interior approves US Wind’s 2-GW Maryland offshore wind project. The Biden administration said it has now permitted 15 GW of offshore wind, bringing the U.S. closer to its goal of deploying 30 GW by 2030. The Department of the Interior on Thursday approved US Wind’s Maryland Offshore Wind project, which is expected to deliver up to 2 GW of energy to the Delmarva Peninsula, marking the tenth commercial-scale offshore wind project to receive approval from the Biden administration. The White House also issued a fact sheet Thursday noting that the administration has now permitted 15 GW of offshore wind, bringing the U.S. closer to its goal of deploying 30 gigawatts of offshore wind by 2030. The White House also said that the administration’s approval of the US Wind project “is part of comprehensive Administration efforts to improve the federal permitting process” – including $1 billion in Inflation Reduction Act spending “to hire experts and invest in new technologies to expedite reviews,” as well as the use of executive authority to speed approvals and reforms to the National Environmental Policy Act. US Wind’s Maryland Offshore Wind project is being developed in three phases, according to the company. It expects the first phase, MarWin, will deliver around 300 MW of energy to Maryland from 22 turbines located around 20 miles off the state’s shore. The second phase, Momentum Wind, is expected to deliver around 808 MW from 55 turbines more than 15 miles from Maryland’s shore.
