In our latest post, Yu Furukawa analyses the information campaign behind the 2015 EU "Refugee Crisis", using Senegal as a case study. The European Migration Network (EMN) Ireland Annual Report on Migration and Asylum 2022 was launched this July. Coordinated, in Portugal, by the Foreigners and Borders Service/Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (SEF) it is an important tool about the EU`s state on migration and asylum. Giving the High Commission for Migration/Alto Comissariado para as Migrações mandate, our close cooperation and commitment on those areas are a reality. Very soon, Portugal will have a dedicated and transversal Agency to deal with all those issues with a focus on the humanitarian approach. #Migration #Integration #HumanRights

The newly established Pact on Migration and Asylum aimed at creating a fairer migration and asylum process in the European Union guaranteeing a common, solidarity-based approach to asylum and migration. It provides for the establishment of a mechanism to manage migration in the long term in a transparent manner and to guarantee decent conditions for people arriving in the EU. But... will the Pact provisions respect human rights in practice? This is the key question with which we should begin to consider the 'pros' and 'cons' of the solution it proposes.

📢 On June 25th and 26th, I had the opportunity to participate in the EMN Belgium Presidency High-Level Conference hosted by the European Migration Network (EMN) Belgium, together with its partners CGVS/CGRA Official, Fedasil, the Immigration Office, and the Federal Migration Centre (Myria). The conference focused on discussing the operationalisation and implementation of the New European Pact on Migration and Asylum, highlighting the urgency and complexity of implementing the national implementation plans with the goal for the pact to be fully operational by June 2026. 🗝 Key takeaways emphasised the importance of coordinated efforts at both EU and member state levels highlighting comprehensive preparedness, contingency planning, and multi-actor cooperation. The conference covered various critical aspects, including solidarity mechanisms, capacity-building and preparedness, border management, identifying both opportunities and gaps. The event sparked constructive dialogue among diverse contributors, including the Belgian Federal Government, EU Commission, UNHCR, EUAA, IOM, and others. I was honoured to represent NADOE - Network of Afghan Diaspora Organisations in Europe at this conference, as I believe it is truly important to include the voices of refugee-led organisations and civil society in this dialogue. #EMN #Migration #Asylum #PactOnMigrationAndAsylum #EU #BelgianPresidency #HumanRights

Interesting and fruitful discussions today at the EUAA Management Board meeting where I represented Romania. In addition to the discussed aspects, I presented the existing situation at the national level in the field of asylum and temporary protection, emphasizing the very good cooperation with EUAA within the Operational Plan under implementation.

🌟 It's Day 2 of the Kick-off Workshop in Valletta, Malta! Organized by the Prague Process and European Union Agency for Asylum – EUAA, with leadership from the Ministry of the Interior of Lithuania for the Thematic Component 4, we're focusing on strengthening capacities on asylum and international protection. Participants from the Prague Process participating states, along with experts from the EUAA, UNHCR, and Frontex, gathered to discuss the current state of play in asylum and international protection across the Prague Process region and address the priority needs. ✒ Key Highlights: - Discussion on the Emergency and Operational Response Framework, including contingency planning and crisis response in the Western Balkans. - In-depth panel on data gathering, analysis, and forecasting in asylum procedures. - Insights into cooperation and asylum capacity building in the Prague Process countries. - Reflections on the EU Pact on Migration and Asylum and the future of the Common European Asylum System. We appreciate the EUAA for hosting us and their ongoing cooperation with the Prague Process migration dialogue.
