Last week I had the honor to be invited to speak at a session convened by the United Nations Science-Policy-Business Forum on the Environment (UNSPBF: https://un-spbf.org/ )in Nairobi. The open floor panel, entitled “The Argument for High-Integrity Carbon Markets,” addressed issues related to greenwashing, the need for clearer guidelines on credit quality, the role of the private sector in driving accountability, and the goal of creating transparent global standards to bolster market confidence. Transparency, accountability, and measurability are pillars of DevvStream’s corporate mission. To restore confidence in global carbon markets, we need conversations like these that encourage an industry-wide commitment to integrity. You can view the panel discussion using the link below. This spring will bring with it historical decisions not only for the status of collective action for environmental rights as fundamental rights in Europe's multi-layered human rights protection system, but also for the future of humanity for the centuries and millennia to come. Europe's environmental leadership ambition of climate neutrality by 2050 and the Paris Agreement target of 1.5°C increase above pre-industrial levels depend on the case law at hand. All our eyes are on the Grand Chamber of the European Court of Human Rights.

My best advice for any of the +/- 50 global challenges is enabling eight billion human beings to acquire the necessary skills to understand the global complexity of global challenges in the first place. We are light-years away. But I am not sure that institutions are all that keen to make this possible... I explained why elsewhere. Fortunately, this is included in the IMNRC's NCBP Agenda. https://lnkd.in/eekRcEqN

When I was a more in-the-street activist, we use to talk about "historic moment" a lot, because we felt like we were actively living history in the making. The latest ruling by the ECtHR against Switzerland for climate inaction is definitely one of these moments. Today at 1pm CEST, an online panel of particularly excellent experts on the matter will debrief this landmark case. Join on Zoom to understand what this means, why it matters and how it will influence future legal actions against states. Full list of speakers: - Prof. Véronique Boillet, Professor of Constitutional Law, Human Rights and the Environment, University of Lausanne - Joie Chowdhury, LL.M. (Columbia Law School), Senior Attorney (Climate Litigation and Accountability) for the Center for International Environmental Law's Climate & Energy Program - Dr. Corina Heri, Postdoctoral researcher at the University of Zurich, "Climate Rights and Remedies" research project - Dr. Yann Robiou du Pont, Marie Curie Fellow, University of Utrecht, researching how to quantify what are fair and ambitious emissions reductions and financial contributions from states, businesses and other actors to align with the Paris Agreement mitigation goals - Prof. Dr. Sonia I. Seneviratne, Deputy head of Inst. Atmospheric and Climate Science, ETH Zürich, coordinating lead author of the 6th assessment report of the IPCC (2018-2021) - Prof. Margaretha Wewerinke-Singh, Associate Professor of Sustainability Law, University of Amsterdam, Counsel for Blue Ocean Law - Moderated by Prof. Evelyne Schmid, Professor of Public International Law, University of Lausanne; with Hana Drif, doctoral researcher, helping with the chat. P.S.: 5 years after the climate strikes of FridaysForFuture and ClimateStrike Switzerland, it seems that we were indeed living historic moments 😉 (though 🇨🇭 definitely did not take appropriate measures to adjust the course of its actions...) #climate #justice

💡The European Court of Human Rights sent a powerful message to the international community today. A failure to implement effective measures combating climate change infringes the right of individuals to respect for private and family life under Article 8 of the Convention. In this groundbreaking case, Verein Klima Seniorinnen Schweiz and Others challenged Switzerland's climate policies, arguing that they violated their human rights by failing to adequately address the climate crisis. The claimants contended that the Swiss government's actions, or lack thereof, infringed upon their right to life and their right to respect for private and family life, as guaranteed by the European Convention on Human Rights. ❗️This decision not only highlights governments' obligations but also carries significant implications for businesses. With climate-related risks increasingly recognized as human rights concerns, companies are likely to be under heightened scrutiny to align their operations with sustainable practices and mitigate their environmental impact. I suspect we will be hearing more about #ClimateJustice in the court rooms of the European judiciary. Certainly a topic to follow. 📌 #HumanRights #ECHR #TeamSPB #Litigation #ClassActions #internationallaw

End of day 0 of the #EUClusterconference with the words of Marek Przeor from European Commission: the next days of the conference are dedicated to shaping the future where we need to think together how we can connect the dots at 🇪🇺 level to strengthen the EU value chains and we need to work together on facilitating investments through clusters.
