A startling 57 percent of people in the LGBTQ+ community have reported that they or an LGBTQ+ loved one has been threatened or have experienced harassment and a trailing 51 percent have experienced violence due to their sexual or gender identity. While sheer statistics cannot encapsulate the social pressures that the LGBTQ+ community experiences, they certainly do speak to the multiple variables that can exacerbate emotional distress for youth in the LGBTQ+ community. To combat this issue, the first step is awareness. Did you know that this week is LGBTQ Health Awareness Week? This week, I want to highlight the importance of health equity in shaping the future of LGBTQ health going forward. LGBTQ individuals, like anyone else, deserve access to healthcare that is free from discrimination and provides culturally competent, affirming, and compassionate services. Understanding and addressing the unique healthcare needs of the LGBTQ community is essential to breaking down barriers that have historically marginalized and underserved this population. I think one way that we could improve LGBTQ healthcare is through better, comprehensive LGBTQ health education. By fostering a better understanding of the specific healthcare needs and disparities within the LGBTQ community, healthcare providers can offer more effective and sensitive care.
