We’re pleased that this study is moving forward 🌟
People in Maple Ridge and Pitt Meadows will benefit from a provincial investment in planning for the future of post-secondary education for the region.
The Province is investing $250,000 for a feasibility study to help outline potential postsecondary
educational opportunities in the area.
This builds on a previous needs assessment of post-secondary education and training in the region funded by the Province. That assessment concluded there is a perceived demand and need for increased access to post-secondary education and skills training in the area, and that the need is projected to grow over the next 20 years.
Mayor Dan Ruimy said, “investing in this feasibility study means investing in the future of our community through accessible and quality higher education. Maple Ridge is one of the fastest growing cities in the region and growing at over twice the national rate. Ensuring our youth, our residents and employers have access to post-secondary education and training is vital to our growth and development as a city. Post secondary educational opportunities here will be a game changer for the many families and people moving here and to their future success.”

North Carolina's community colleges are facing a pivotal year in 2024. I have spent the past three months producing a landscape analysis I hope you will take the time to read.
One key development will be the potential implementation of Propel NC, a new funding formula that could significantly impact the allocation of resources across the system. Additionally, the introduction of a three-year graduation plan and the mass expansion of Opportunity Scholarships may influence dual enrollment programs.
Throughout the year, we will closely monitor these issues and their impact on the community college system in North Carolina. Stay tuned!

The The City University of New York's (CUNY) M/WBE and SDVOB procurement event highlighted efforts we all must take to promote greater diversity and equity for contract opportunities with CUNY’s 25 campuses, DASNY, and other state agencies.
Basil Smikle, PhD, Director of the Public Policy Program and the Roosevelt House Institute for Public Policy at Hunter College urged us a society to “be vigilant in pushing back against inaction and apathy.”
Tracey Mitchell, Special Advisor, Diversity and Compliance with the Gateway Development Commission reminded us of the importance of introducing young people to specialized areas of the A/E/C industry. Participation goals can’t be met if firms qualified to perform the work don’t exist.
CUNY’s Five-Year Capital Plan for FY 2023-24 through FY 2027-28 is $5.44 billion. With a commitment to meeting the state’s 30% MWBE contracting goals, we commend the University for hosting this event to bring clarity to the procurement process.

It was an awesome responsibility to take the lead on writing this grant, and it will be an even greater one to lead it over the next 5 years. I'm deeply grateful to Farmingdale State College to be given this opportunity to expand and deepen the commitment and connection we have to our students through the creation of an Office of First Year and Transfer Year Experience. Ready and up for the challenge.
Universities are noisy, raucous places. A student beginning their career is bombarded with information from the moment they are accepted to the first day of classes - and the real work hasn't even begun. Many universities have no "front door" but rather a bunch of ingresses that can be confusing and even debilitating. For the first generation student, or for the student who doesn't have the cultural capital to navigate this crucial period in a college career, it can lead to disaster.
The goal of EMERGE is not simple - but it is straightforward. It's to address the problem described above.
How?
➡ EMERGE will serve a total of 1250 students over 5 years (750 FTFT, 500 Transfer).
➡ EMERGE will allow the College to create an Office of First Year and Transfer Year Experience (OFY/TYE), which does not currently exist, that will be staffed with a Coordinator, two academic success coaches, one wellness coach, and administrative support.
➡ After 5 years, the goal is that OFY/TYE will serve EVERY incoming hashtag
#farmingdale student.
➡ EMERGE calls for many curricular innovations, including: relying on the College's Concurrent Enrollment program to support college-readiness, implementing First-year Learning Communities, and replacing developmental courses in Math and Writing with credit-bearing co-requisite courses.
➡EMERGE erects co- and extra-curricular programming that has been a mainstay of Farmingdale's success in other areas: holistic advising and wrap-around support services; academic tutoring and coaching in math, writing, ELL, and other content areas; leadership, professional development, and financial literacy coaching; summer and winter undergraduate research experiences as well as internships, civic engagement, and applied learning opportunities.
➡ Lastly, EMERGE provides substantial onboarding through FTFT and Transfer Orientations for students as well as professional development for faculty around learning communities and culturally responsive pedagogies.
Lots of moving parts. One vision and one goal. Let's get to work.

📊 Far too many high-achieving, low- and moderate-income community college students, especially in central Pennsylvania, miss the opportunity to transfer to four-year institutions despite their potential. Research shows that over 50,000 students across the U.S. face this challenge, with only 33% transferring and just 16% earning a bachelor’s degree.
Lebanon Valley College President James MacLaren shares details about their new initiative aimed at changing these statistics. 🎓
In partnership with Harrisburg Area Community College-Gettysburg Campus, LVC is developing a 5️⃣ pathway infrastructure that offers early admission and holistic support for low- and moderate-income students. This initiative provides clear pathways and individualized guidance, helping more students transfer, earn degrees, and drive a positive impact in the region.
Notably, LVC will cover the full financial need for Pell-eligible students, ensuring that from the moment they start, they’re set up for success. Early admission and structured degree pathways will allow students to begin at LVC with full junior status, streamlining their journey to a bachelor’s degree.

New publication in "Educational Policy" with Cheri Daily and Dr. Shawn Coon. We qualitatively examined the process leading to Utah's 2020 higher ed governance consolidation and the subsequent/on-going impacts on the state's 16 degree-granting institutions and technical colleges.
Given the lull in successful state higher ed governance reform as well as the increased attention to such efforts nationally, this article is quite timely... despite us starting this work over three years ago.
