In this article, we’ll go into Rudy’s passion for affordable housing, his role as an educator, and his commitment to closing the housing gap in McAllen.

Nationwide serving its community! 💙 The Weingart Towers, a 19-story, 278-unit permanent supportive housing development in Skid Row, Los Angeles, celebrated its grand opening June 19, 2024. Here are the key points: Purpose and Hope: The project aims to improve and transform Skid Row, which has been the epicenter of the region’s homelessness crisis. Elected officials and homeless services providers expressed hope that this initiative will make a positive impact. Amenities: Weingart Tower I features amenities such as a cafe, a club room, a gym, music and art rooms, a computer lab, dog runs, terraces with community gardens, and common balcony areas. It provides high-quality apartment living for homeless individuals. Cost: The first tower cost an estimated $165 million, with approximately $595,000 per residential unit. Funding came from Proposition HHH, a $1.2 billion bond measure approved by Los Angeles voters in 2016 to support affordable housing for people experiencing homelessness.   This project represents an important step toward providing dignified housing and support services for those in need.

Excited to see the progress of our master planned community NorthShore, located along the St. Mary’s River in Camden County, Coastal Georgia. This 629-home community at build out includes a market-leading, resort-style amenity package including a 3,400 sqft clubhouse, boat launch, floating dock, observation deck, playground, and passive recreational/sports fields.   NorthShore is a classic Drapac investment play: we identified a prime asset in an undervalued growth market, acquired it for a fraction of the infrastructure value, and added significant value during the hold period by undertaking thoughtful and strategic initiatives to restore and improve the community.   A critical piece of our investment strategy has been to bring in multiple homebuilding partners including 1) Century Communities (NYSE: CCS), 2) Maronda Homes, and 3) Smith Family Homes. This approach has resulted in tremendous success for both the builders and overall community; builders are seeing strong absorption and price growth, and the community is appealing to a wider audience with a range of products and price points.   Camden County is experiencing significant growth due to shifting demographic factors (+8% population and +26% household income growth over the last 5 years) and the expansion of regional economic drivers, which has translated directly to increased demand and home sale prices (+64% over the last 5 years). https://lnkd.in/dKTubEn9

This month marks the 40th birthday of Inside Housing (and a shout out to the team who worked so hard to get so much great content into this month's edition). Just over a month ago I met up with Inside Housing’s first editor, Bill Randall, who launched the title 40 years ago this month. Still full of campaigning zeal – we met at the The Real Junk Food Project in Brighton, which intercepts food waste destined for land fill and feeds people on a ‘pay as you feel’ basis – Bill spoke with enthusiasm both about the magazine and the campaigns he started (read more about some of them in this month's edition). Hopefully that campaigning approach lives on today. In recent years we have campaigned around homelessness with Cathy at 50 (hat tip to the ongoing Homes for Cathy campaign group), accessible housing and carers via Harry's Pledge, race with our Racism and Housing series, and fire safety via Never Again and End Our Cladding Scandal (a shout out to our contributing editor Peter Apps for his work on fire safety). As we turn 40, our ongoing Build Social campaign we will continue to call for parties across the UK to commit to the delivery of substantial numbers of homes for social rent in their manifestos at the next election (our conversation about Build Social with housing secretary Michael Gove is in the new edition, out today). Build Social gives us the chance to promote the importance of the sector more widely and the impact the lack of investment in social housing has had on society. In our anniversary year, we will also be doing our bit to promote the sector as a career of choice. To flag the important work being done and the range of career options available, we are this month launching a hunt for the individuals who will shape the sector’s future for the next forty years. Please nominate colleagues or people in your networks who you think are doing fantastic work as part of our new forty under forty list (entry details online and in this month's magazine) The social and affordable housing sector plays a crucial role in society. For too long it has been undervalued, to the detriment of many, including the 139,000 children currently living in temporary accommodation. We need to call clearly and unambiguously for more homes for social rent. And we need to talk seriously about how to attract and retain talent and build the skills that the sector needs moving forward. That is our commitment in our anniversary year. They are crusading for construction of well-designed housing in desirable parts of the city that serves everyone but the most wealthy. KC Tenants co-founder Tara Raghuveer has deemed this form of “true public housing” the organization’s “north star.” The group is helping push Kansas City closer to that goal. An evolution of an important partnership

"Our model is a limited-equity cooperative model, which means families will be building some wealth as they are living in the cooperative. Building wealth is something that doesn't exist in much affordable rental housing because that hasn't been the model. But our approach is also about spreading out the risk, collectivizing as much of it as we can, so that the individual impact is lessened from individual families.
