Two satellite programs, one mission! 🌍 A new generation of methane-tracking satellites is set to revolutionize emissions monitoring this year. MethaneSAT and the Carbon Mapper coalition’s Tanager satellites - developed by PlanetLabs.Earth with technology from NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory - are designed to detect and measure methane emissions globally. Methane contributes significantly to current global warming, and these satellites will provide the data needed to tackle this challenge effectively. 🔭 MethaneSAT: High-resolution, wide-area methane tracking. 🔎 Tanager: Detailed insights at the facility level. 🤝 Together, they will catalyze #ClimateAction to #CutMethane and slow the rate of warming, in our lifetime. For business, transparency enabled by satellites could introduce new levels of scrutiny over the oil and gas industry, and enable a new standard for the financial sector's analysis of oil and gas assets. it's inspiring when smart, motivated, and dedicated people work tirelessly on something for years and watch it literally launch into space - check out the video of the MethaneSat SpaceX launch on march 3! https://lnkd.in/dj5DNvX5 read about what we're doing at google from Yael Maguire: "Methane from human sources is responsible for about 30% of global warming today, and a big contributor of methane in the atmosphere comes from extracting fossil fuels, like oil and gas, from the Earth. By powering methane detection algorithms with Cloud computing and applying AI to satellite imagery to identify oil and gas infrastructure around the world, our goal is to help EDF quantify and trace methane emissions to their source. With this information, energy companies, researchers and the public sector can take action to reduce emissions from oil and gas infrastructure faster and more effectively." https://lnkd.in/dB5cfr4R

Did you know that earlier this month, something cool happened and it's flying over our heads? The MethaneSAT satellite was launched on March 4, 2024, and it's a game-changer in our fight against climate change. This satellite, a joint effort between the Environmental Defense Fund and the New Zealand Space Agency, is equipped with advanced technology to detect methane emissions with incredible precision. It's like having a super-powered microscope in space, giving us a clearer picture of methane leaks from both large and small sources. This is crucial for making informed policy decisions, ensuring the safe use of natural gas, and reducing greenhouse gas emissions. So next time you look up at the sky, remember that there's a satellite up there helping us protect our planet. Amazing to see the launch of MethaneSAT the first environmental satellite from a #nonprofit organization, the Environmental Defense Fund launched on SpaceX's Transporter 10 the other day. Why MethaneSAT is an important mission? This methane satellite changes the game for #sustainable #finance, particularly for the #oilandgas. MethaneSAT intends to make its data publicly available, supported by prominent platforms such as Google Earth Engine. This is empowering for regulators, #investors, and the public to facilitate emissions reduction efforts. The transparency offered by MethaneSAT will hold the oil and gas industry accountable, moving from estimated to measured emissions data. Oil and gas companies have the opportunity to tap into this data throwe to remedy poor infrastructure. It is estimated that leaking methane is at $2 billion per year in the US alone. #financialinstitutions will benefit from more sophisticated risk analysis, enhancing their understanding of oil and gas assets' environmental impact and how to avoid #Stranded Assets. By leveraging #EOdata from MethanSAT, financial institutions can better understand and mitigate environmental risks, thereby avoiding systemic failures. This approach facilitates the transition towards more environmentally sustainable practices and investments, ultimately fostering long-term financial stability and resilience, #WEHOPE. #methane #methaneemissions #methanereduction #environment #spacetechnology #earthobservation #sustainablefinance #ClimateRisk #Materiality Andrew Howell Ben Caldecott Christophe Christiaen Andy Bennett Dan Wicks Daria Stepanova

MethaneSAT: Free, Public Data to Fight Climate Change MethaneSAT, a new initiative designed to track methane emissions. As you know, methane is a potent greenhouse gas, and tackling its release is crucial for combating climate change. Here's where MethaneSAT comes in: - This satellite will track methane emissions specifically from oil and gas production. - The collected data will be freely available to everyone - companies, governments, and the public. - This transparency allows all parties to identify and ultimately reduce methane emissions. - This is a significant development in monitoring and addressing a potent greenhouse gas. #methane #climateaction #satellites #MethaneSAT #sustainability P.S. MethaneSAT is an exceptional project, a series of satellites that will find and measure methane emissions with unparalleled precision – including emissions that other satellites can’t see. The mission objective is to motivate and enable the reduction of methane emissions from the global oil and gas sector by 45% by 2025, and 70% by 2030. The first satellite is scheduled to be launched into orbit next month and it will circle the globe 15 times a day, providing the first truly detailed global picture of methane emissions. #oilandgasindustry #methaneemissions #methanereduction #satellite #oilandgassector #decarbonsation https://lnkd.in/deC93Ah4

A remarkable day. We just launched a satellite! Yes, Environmental Defense Fund launched MethaneSAT. To tackle methane. Because methane is responsible for 30% of the increased temperature in the world (since it absorbs 80 times more heat than carbon dioxide.) MethaneSAT is the world's most advanced methane detecting satellite, delivering an unprecedented level of clarity and precision. The #OilAndGas sector is one of the largest sources of manmade methane emissions. 80% of this can be tackled with existing technology; and 45% of this can be done at net zero cost. #MethaneSAT will help shine the light on the problem and advance the oil and gas sector's progress towards the solution. Often times, the problems of climate change seem too big and complex to fix. This is not always the case; this is one of them. Methane management in oil & gas is the easiest, fastest and cheapest way of decarbonising. Also, climate change can't be addressed without addressing methane. In all this, a satellite is rather handy... #methane #Satellite #MethaneSAT #EnvironmentalDefenseFund

During #COP28, countries and industries made new commitments to reduce methane gas leaks. It remains to be seen if these pledges are followed through, but Nigeria is an example of what happens if they don't: wasted methane could've powered the country twice over while leaving a $450-million-sized hole in unpaid fines every year.
