🌟 Reflecting on Last Night’s Panel at Future Fabrics Expo Edition in NYC Last night, we had the privilege of hosting the panel ‘Circular Approaches to Sustainability’ featuring Steven Chueng from RECYCTEX CO., LTD. Callie Clayton of Spiber Inc., Angeline Elfström from OnceMore®, and Annabelle Georgina Hutter from Säntis Textiles and moderated by Alice Roche-Naude (she/her) of Futerra. The conversation centred around the diversity of approaches to circularity using different material feedstocks. Recyctex’s ReTraze innovation confronts the most immediate industry problem regarding the oversupply of virgin petrochemical sources, creating fibres and yarns from traceable PET waste streams. Spiber’s biofabricated brewed protein fibres explores a future thinking material category grown outside of natural systems using plant based waste cellulose feedstock. Oncemore by Södra captures the value locked into post-consumer textile waste by recycling blended fabrics and combining it with renewable wood from Södra’s 52,000 members. Säntis Textiles takes a mechanical engineering perspective with precision to create RCO100, a machine that produces the world’s first 100% mechanically recycled cotton fibre. While each company brings a fresh and ingenious solution to the insurmountable waste problem in the fashion industry, a common mindset between these best-practice approaches emerge: redefining perspectives on waste, identifying the creative solutions, and recapturing the value. We’re grateful for the shared knowledge that our community of best practice exhibitors bring forth, and their contributions to a fashion system that protects, recovers and rebuilds planetary resilience. Clothing alone accounts for around 10 percent of greenhouse gas emissions from human activity, and much of the pre- and post-consumer waste generated by the textile industry ends up incinerated or in landfill. ANDRITZ is at the core of the movement to provide industrially and economically viable solutions that bring circularity to the world of natural and synthetic fibers. The start-up of the first of its kind industrial plant for automated #sorting and recycling of textile #waste at Nouvelles Fibres Textiles shows perfect case of successful industry collaborations with ANDRITZ as central hub of this network.The innovative approach lies in the combination of these two areas in one process. "Essentials and Challenges in Developing Melt-Spun Marine-Degradable Textile Fibers”, lecture from Mohammadreza Naeimirad, Senbis Polymer Innovations B.V. as part of the 4th Dornbirn-GFC GFC Innovation Days 2024.   Currently there are millions of tons of #plastic materials accumulated in the #oceans. This has significant #environmental implications, prompting the need for sustainable alternatives in various industries, including #textiles. - Textile fibers, particularly #polyester fibers, contribute significantly to the issue of microplastics in marine environments. They are the second-largest source (accounting for 35% of the problem) after tire debris. - While alternatives like natural #fibers (e.g., cotton or viscose) exist, they come with their limitations such as carbon and water footprint. Excited to share that I have participated in a fascinating online seminar on “Sustainable Design of Textiles and Recycling in the Textile Industry” as part of the EU-funded Butexcomp project! 🇪🇺🇹🇷 The textile industry needs a transformative revolution by exploring alternative resources and transitioning towards a circular economy to minimize waste and promote sustainability. Did you know❓️ 🔸️ 60% of all new clothing materials are plastics! This translates to significant plastic pollution, with textile production contributing 42 million tons of plastic waste annually. 🔸️ Only 1% of clothes get recycled into new garments! The above statistics highlight the existing recycling gap and the need for alternatives to reduce the negative emission of clothing. ✔️ #EcoDesign & #TEN_Strategies: Many brands are exploring Eco-design principles and the TEN strategies by Earley & Politowics to reduce their environmental footprint. ✔️ #Nature's #Inspiration: Biomimicry offers exciting possibilities! Think Tyla's stunning #Met_Gala_2024 sand sculpture dress made of sand and micro-crystals. Stretchy fibres offer comfort and a snug fit, but are they recyclable? According to a 2021 EU report, elastane, commonly found in these textiles, poses challenges for recycling.   Mechanical recycling is difficult as elastane resists shredding and requires high forces to obtain individual fibres, while thermomechanical recycling struggles with the inability of elastane to melt, complicating fibre-to-fibre recycling. Chemical recycling shows promise, as several techniques can degrade elastane, however elastane degradation products deserve more attention due to their potential toxicity. RISE, together with Chalmers University of Technology are currently collaborating on this issue, to understand where these degradation products end up, and if their release can be mitigated: https://lnkd.in/dtrHyazS   Looking to the future, biobased fibres like the polyester PTT offer potential alternatives to elastane. NEW REPORT: Mandatory EPR Needed for a Circular Textile Economy The Ellen MacArthur Foundation The Ellen MacArthur Foundation is calling for a global shift towards a circular economy for textiles, and their new report argues that mandatory, fee-based Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) is a key driver. Why is EPR Needed? Currently, over 80% of textiles end up incinerated, landfilled or polluting the environment. A linear economic system is failing textiles, and EPR can help transition to a circular one. What are the Benefits of EPR? The report highlights several benefits of mandatory EPR: Funding dedicated textile collection: EPR can ensure there's enough funding to create and maintain separate collection systems for textiles. Focus beyond just recycling: EPR should incentivize reducing consumption of textiles and designing higher quality, longer-lasting clothing. Transparency and traceability: EPR can improve tracking of textiles throughout the lifecycle. Investment in infrastructure: A well-designed EPR scheme can attract investment in new technologies for textile reuse and recycling.
