A great piece of analysis on cobrand cards from Jay Sorensen. A startling statistic for me is that American Express pays $6.8B, an estimated 4% of its $168B revenues from the cobrand card to Delta Air Lines. And no great surprise but Qantas continues to excel commercially achieving $96 in revenue per member. No wonder Qantas is trying to recapture hearts and minds from its flagging members by releasing new reward seats to continue to feed the QFF cash machine. And all this against the backdrop of 20 years of interchange fee regulation in Australia which appears to have done little to benefit the consumer, with reduced rewards and increased bank fees, whilst merchants have pocketed the benefits. Globally, cobrand cards represent a great opportunity for operators of large scale loyalty programs, especially airlines, but all too often money is left on the table, relationships sour or the value proposition is negotiated away from members and the brands in favour of the banks. Urban Leopard Ventures has seen the pitfalls and pleasure of cobrand cards firsthand from the different perspectives in multiple markets, and helped our clients benefit from successful delivery of this powerful piece of loyalty program strategy. Brazilian low-cost carrier GOL could be considering filing for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection in the United States as early as February 2024, according to Brazilian newspaper, Folha de Sao Paulo. The news triggered a stock market sell off, with shares in the airline down by as much as 13% at times during trading hours on January 15, 2024. Although its operational result is positive, with the carrier reporting a 17.7% operational margin in Q3 2023, its last reported financial period, GOL is reportedly struggling with debt and lease payments. The airline has built up 20 billion reais (around US$4.1 billion) in debt, of which 3 billion reais (US$600 million approximately) is due within 12 months. Many people in the airline industry laud the move to e-ticket as a game changer in terms of productivity, simplicity, and customer experience. It was not easy, it took longer than anyone wanted, impacted many players in the eco-system. Though in the end, was a great success. At Amadeus we are committed to the next big "upgrade" to our industry and that is One Order. It is not a question of if, it is a question of when.... are you ready? We are. #ModernRetailing #OneOrder #NDC #AmadeusNevio
At Amadeus we have always had it very clear that #NDC is not the end-game, but rather part of a broader vision, including One Order, which has enhanced retailing as its ultimate goal. One Order, as described by IATA, is “an industry-led initiative aiming to simplify the airline reservation, delivery, and accounting systems”, and is therefore an important element in the framework of the overall NDC adoption programs. IATA has officially certified Amadeus’ new Nevio Order Management System as “One Order Capable”; this certification reinforces our commitment to our industry’s retail transformation! #enhancedretailing #airdistribution #NDCjourney #OneOrder

An interesting move from Turkish Airlines to add a $24 fee for bookings that do not come though its new NDC distribution system. This is obviously to encourage people to book direct and not through GDS systems & is a 'stick' approach as opposed to the 'carrot.' They do not seem to have gone as far as American Airlines who have recently changed course to distribution through agents after a disastrous launch of their NDC system which they believe has cost them a reduction in revenue of $1.5bn. Perhaps Turkish Airlines, slower approach will prove to be successful but it does show the challenges airlines have in trying to pivot from the old GDS systems to new direct distribution channels.

🛩 Airlines are upping their loyalty game! British Airways just made a big change to their Avios program (their points system) that lets members use points for almost any flight, even paying just $1.25 per flight + Avios points! The breakdown: 👉 Travelers can now use Avios points to significantly reduce the cash price of almost any British Airways flight, from economy to first class. 👉 This gives travelers more choice and flexibility in how they use their points. 👉 For airlines like British Airways, loyalty programs are a huge deal. They help attract and retain high-spending customers. Strong loyalty programs can even be worth billions of dollars! This is a great example of how loyalty programs are getting more flexible and attractive for both businesses and travelers. So, booking your BA flight soon, we suppose? 🎈 #LoyaltyNews #BritishAirways #CustomerLoyalty #Avios
