It was a privilege to participate in a panel discussion at the recent National Institute for Theoretical and Computational Sciences Colloquium held at the Neelsie Cinema, Stellenbosch University, to discuss my new book, "African Artificial Intelligence: Discovering Africa's #AI Identity." Joining esteemed colleagues Prof Bruce Bassett (UCT), Prof Kanshukan Rajaratnam (SU), Prof Brian Ganson and Prof Francesco Petruccione (NITheCS), we delved into the critical role of #AI in shaping #Africa's future. Key topics included: 1. African digital sovereignty: How can we foster the development of homegrown #AI solutions? 2. Tailored #AI strategies: Addressing Africa's unique challenges through #AI-driven solutions 3. Harnessing #AI for positive impact: Leveraging #AI to drive social and economic development 4. Navigating the #AI landscape: Overcoming challenges and seizing opportunities 5. Data privacy and security: Balancing innovation with protection It was a stimulating conversation about Africa's immense potential to become a global leader in #AI. I'm excited to continue the dialogue and contribute to Africa's #AI journey. What are your thoughts on the role of #AI in Africa's development? Let's continue the conversation! I would like to extend my sincere thanks to Renée Etsebeth Kotzé, Francesco Petruccione, National Institute for Theoretical and Computational Sciences, and Stellenbosch University for organizing such a stimulating and informative event. Check out the report for the most recent collective intelligence gathering of the Exponential Tech Senior Fellows (World in 2050) co-authored by me and Shane Szarkowski, PhD! https://lnkd.in/gfU2zp3N It's an incredibly unique opportunity to sit in on these meetings and hear insights from all these bright minds: Joe Toscano Stacey Rolland Srujana Kaddevarmuth Mario Vasilescu Nikos Acuña. Synthesizing their conversation was no easy task, but seeing it all come together in a way that accounts for their diverse insights is very rewarding. Thanks to Shane Szarkowski, PhD for teaching me the inner workings of compiling these reports! I also have to give extra props to Shane Szarkowski, PhD as this is still a semi-new genre that he has been working on for Diplomatic Courier, and it's one that's especially suitable for the times. Excerpt: "Further, this absence of transparency impacts policymakers’ ability to define ‘truth’ and ‘misinformation,’ which, provenance aside, is already a monumental undertaking when information itself has various purposes—anything from persuasion to education. Without bipartisan consensus on such important terminology nor what our information is worth, it becomes increasingly difficult to identify the root of the AI problem and assess risk." Members of World in 2050’s Senior Fellows cohort and Brain Trust weigh in on what conditions need to be in place for AI to be used as a tool for societal good. ✔️ We’ve generally paid less attention to how AI can be used actively as a force for the good of societal health. ✔️ To address constraints, a better understanding of the roots of our ‘AI problem’ is necessary. ✔️ Without adequate provenance, there’s little to no transparency—creating a digital landscape ripe for manipulation. Top 10 Digital Disruption & Top 25 FinTech by Thinkers 360 | Program Director for Digital Leadership at IMI | WBAF Senator for Ireland and Smart Cities Board Member | Co-Founder, Digital Transformation Lab
The unprecedented speed and scale of progress with artificial intelligence (AI) in recent years suggest that society may be living through an inflexion point and also holds the promise of revolutionising scientific research. At this critical juncture, it is imperative that we comprehend the profound influence of AI on science and take the necessary steps to exploit its potential fully - The Royal Society. RECOMMENDATIONS 🔰 Governments, research funders and AI developers should improve access to essential AI infrastructures. 🔰 Funders and AI developers should prioritise the accessibility and usability of AI tools developed for scientific research. 🔰 Research funders and scientific communities should ensure research meets open science principles and practices to facilitate AI’s benefits in science. 🔰 Scientific communities should build the capacity to oversee AI systems used in science and ensure their ethical use for the public good. #science #STEM #AI #artificialintelligence #generativeai #digitalinnovation #digitaldisruption #digitaltransformation #disruptivetechnologies #airisks #aiethics #aigovernance #aiskills #scientificresearch Paidi O Reilly Prof. Dr. Ingrid Vasiliu-Feltes Martin Moeller Aaron Lax Richard Turrin Sally Eaves Imtiaz Adam Irene Lyakovetsky🎧🎙 Dinis Guarda Antonio Grasso Dr. Martha Boeckenfeld Ian Jones Nicolas Babin Mike Flache Birgul COTELLI, Ph. 🌟Responsible and Trusted Research Workshop (16 July 2024)🌟 We had an incredible time hosting a hands-on workshop focused on Responsible Innovation (RI) for Bioscience and AI projects! Understanding Responsible Innovation means conducting research and innovation that anticipates future impacts on people and the environment, aiming to maximise benefits and minimise risks. RI is a BBSRC priority, essential for funding applications to show RI embedded throughout projects. During the workshop, we introduced RI Prompts and Practice Cards to help bridge the gap between RI theory and practice. These tools are designed to support researchers in effectively implementing RI frameworks in their projects. For those managing or working on BBSRC research projects, incorporating RI is crucial. Check out the RI framework here: https://lnkd.in/dWchwP58 and our RI Prompts and Practice Cards here: https://lnkd.in/dmA3wckk. Thank you to everyone who joined us and contributed to the insightful discussions. Together, we're making strides in enhancing our research with RI insights! #ResponsibleInnovation #BBSRC #Bioscience #AI #Research #Workshop #Innovation #TrustedResearch

I am of the opinion that one of the biggest problems we as humans face is that we do not sufficiently listen to science and act accordingly - including me. For example, there is pretty good scientific evidence for that I should limit how much salt I consume in a day. In comparison to many other people, I am even able to study the overwhelming scientific evidence for my overconsumption of salt. If I can understand the scientific reasoning but still lack motivation to change, I am afraid that this may be a larger social phenomenon. So, what other tool is there to force change on a larger scale? I believe it is science. Over the course of history, scientific progress has nearly always forced itself into reality. This is why I argue that faster scientific progress may enable us to solve complex problems in less time. This is why we founded scienceOS - to support researchers on scale. And if this also forces me to eat less salt, so be it.
We are facing enormously complex and highly global challenges for which we require a steady stream of scientific discoveries. Simply put: we believe we need more scientists and faster science. This is why we are building scienceOS, the personal AI agent for scientists. We aim to support researchers from hypothesis to publication by seamlessly implementing AI into research processes. With scienceOS, we are providing a personal research assistant that helps tear down barriers that prevent people from becoming scientists and support active researchers in their manyfold journeys towards a better world. We have made and aim to make many more friends on our journey to support scientists. Connect with us to become our next friend. --- We are scienceOS. We strive for a world where scientists can swiftly tackle global challenges and assist researchers by providing them with AI-enhanced research tools. #scienceOS #vision #mission www.scienceOS.ai
