A Transformative Market Visit: Lessons from My Britannia Internship My recent immersion into the vibrant world of Britannia through a market visit was a transformative experience. Navigating the bustling marketplace presented a unique set of challenges and opportunities, from which I gleaned invaluable insights that I'd love to share from my personal experience. Be Patient: Never disturb a shopkeeper while they are busy with their customers. Only try to talk to them when they are free. Represent Well: Never forget that you are representing your company in the market and should speak accordingly. Engage Naturally: First, try to buy something from their shops and then start a conversation (it was summer, so I used to buy a cold water bottle). Observe and Learn: Sometimes just stand and observe the entire buying process; from there, you get a few insights and ideas for pitching. Collaborate with Salesmen: Try to coordinate with the salesman with whom you are going for the market visit. They are the ones who give you more ideas and insights about the market that you never knew before. Greet Before You Speak: Always greet the shopkeeper before starting the conversation. Learn from Experts: Shadow experienced sales representatives to learn about effective selling techniques. Be Discreet with Data Collection: Never ever ask them to fill your Google form that you have prepared. Instead, sometimes try to note and observe and then fill it accordingly. These are my personal experiences and learnings from my market visit as an intern at Britannia. I'm excited to share that I have completed my 3-month internship at #Amul (GCMMF). During my time there, I gained valuable insights and practical experience in Operations and Production Management, as well as Sales and Marketing Management. Operations and Production Management (45 days): During this phase, I delved into Amul's intricate supply chain, exploring the entire journey from milk procurement to distribution. Key learnings included: - Milk Procurement: Understanding the processes from farm to factory. - Production: Witnessing the creation of diverse dairy products. - Inventory Management: Efficient management of warehouse inventory. - Dispatch Processes: Overseeing the dispatch of milk pouches and other products. - Procurement: Collaborating with the procurement department for raw materials. Sales and Marketing Management (45 days): This period was equally enriching, as I conducted market research to understand consumer preferences for loose milk versus pouch milk. Additionally, I collaborated on group projects to investigate why some retailers opt not to stock Amul breads. This internship has equipped me with a comprehensive understanding of operational efficiencies and market dynamics, enhancing my skills and preparing me for future challenges in the industry. I diligently investigated the root causes of defects, utilizing problem-solving skills to determine effective solutions. In the candy and bubble departments, I worked independently to analyze production data and identify patterns related to defects. By conducting thorough investigations, I was able to pinpoint areas for improvement and propose strategies to eliminate defects. Whether it was adjusting machine settings or implementing quality control measures, I actively contributed to enhancing the overall production efficiency and product quality. Moreover, my internship provided me with invaluable insights into the standards required for export. With Pearl Confectionery's reach spanning 39 countries, including New Zealand, Australia, and Saudi Arabia, I gained firsthand knowledge of the rigorous standards and regulations governing international trade. This experience has deepened my understanding of the importance of quality control and compliance in meeting global market demands. Additionally, I gained valuable experience working with a variety of equipment, including mixers, cookers, moulds, wrapping machines, and packaging machines. I was actively involved in observing the operations of these machines, ensuring smooth production processes. Additionally, I calculated the working efficiency of machines to identify opportunities for improvement and optimize the production process. Similarly, in the chocolate department, I applied the same analytical approach to identify defects and propose solutions. By leveraging my technical knowledge, I assisted in streamlining the production process and ensuring the consistent delivery of high-quality chocolate products. My key responsibilities and achievements included: Inventory Control: Assisted in managing inventory levels, including tracking stock, conducting regular audits, and updating inventory records to ensure accuracy and prevent discrepancies. Warehouse Operations: Supported daily warehouse operations by organizing and labeling products, ensuring proper storage, and maintaining a clean and orderly environment. Order Fulfillment: Played a role in picking, packing, and shipping orders, coordinating with the logistics team to meet delivery deadlines and optimize order processing efficiency. It is that time of the year when most students go through a phase of transition in their life. For those of you stepping into the corporate world for the first time, be assured that it is going to be an equally exciting journey as it was in your college and school. For those who are stepping back into the world of business after a break, a lot will change, for better and it will all be worth it. To be honest, I was a bit nervous starting my corporate journey as a fresher, right after B-school. But to my fortune, my career started with an organisation like DIAGEO India a place that felt no different than a family. I had mentors who would go out of their way to help me, made me feel comfortable and inclusive. My journey as a Management Trainee began in July last year. In the last 10 months, I have had the privilege of staying in over 4 different cities and working with 4 different functions. What more can I ask for! In my first stint, I was tagged to the supply team, followed by a project with the customer marketing team. I made the best use of my MBA when I got the opportunity to work with the HR team. Working with each team has truly been an enriching experience. Diageo’s commitment to inclusive & innovative culture provided me with enormous opportunities to learn and grow. Finally, I was given a chance to do a factory stint as my final project. This practically got me the closest to understanding the business. Once again, a big shout out to the entire team at the unit and corporate office for trusting me with one of the most crucial projects which is extremely rare for a fresh graduate to get. Factory is where I truly understood Diageo, one big family, celebrating life everyday, everywhere. This is where life came a full circle and I understood how an organization’s values can truly resonate with your personal values. Lastly, as someone who had no idea about the corporate world to have worked in diverse functions in the last 10 months, I would like to say that for all those starting out their corporate career, be comfortable in ‘not knowing’ since that’s the best way to unlearn and learn.
