American Association of Blacks in Energy and The National Association of Black Women In Construction Urge GSA to Prioritize Equity in Federal Fleet Electrification Procurement AABE President Ralph Cleveland emphasizes, "As U.S. infrastructure spending continues to grow and reach needed levels for remediation and renewal, it is imperative that equity is a laser-focused effort to bring historically disadvantaged and Black business owners into the mix to assure building capacity in diverse communities. Neglecting equity as a needed outcome will risk not only falling short in sustainable growth but will also exacerbate racial disparities within our economy.” Read the press release here: https://lnkd.in/eZrKdzc8

March 10th marks Harriet Tubman Day, a powerful moment to commemorate the extraordinary life and legacy of the "Moses of her people." As the leader of the Underground Railroad, Harriet Tubman risked her own freedom to guide hundreds of enslaved individuals to the North, embodying courage, resilience, and unwavering dedication to justice. "I freed a thousand slaves. I could have freed a thousand more if only they had known they were slaves." - Harriet Tubman Tubman's legacy continues to inspire the Harriet Tubman Foundation for Safe Passage (HTFSP), a Black women-founded organization dedicated to empowering individuals and communities facing economic and spiritual oppression. By providing comprehensive support, from advocacy and business coaching to financial literacy resources, HTFSP empowers individuals to break free from systemic barriers and chart their own paths to freedom. Did you know: ⁍ Black Americans are twice as likely to be unemployed as white Americans. ⁍ Black-owned businesses face significant funding disparities, receiving only 2% of venture capital funding nationwide. ⁍ Over 40 million Americans grapple with student loan debt, disproportionately impacting Black communities. To mark Black History Month, Initiatives in Art and Culture links central themes regarding Black history in America with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), adopted by the United Nations in 2015, as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure that by 2030 all people enjoy peace and prosperity. Designed to end poverty, hunger, AIDS, and discrimination against women and girls, the 17 SDGs are integrated—they recognize that action in one area will affect outcomes in others, and that development must balance social, economic and environmental sustainability. Etched in the collective consciousness are images such as this of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the Selma to Montgomery march in 1965. The words from his speech “Remaining Awake Through a Great Revolution” given at the National Cathedral on March 31, 1968, continue to thunder today: “We shall overcome because the arc of the moral universe is long but it bends toward justice.” In pursuit of justice and SDG Goal 10, we must continue the work. #naacp #bhm #blackhistorymonth #mlk #hbcu #blacklivesmatter #blm #civilrights #un #unitednations #sdg #sdg10 #sustainabledevelopmentgoals #drking #martinlutherking #aclu

Founder / Director - SibiNet | Recruiting Diverse Talent into Construction | Social Value Champion | Youth Development Specialist
BROTHERS MEET UP Last night, I joined the brothers to spend some quality time together. While we converse in a chill and relaxed environment, I took the opportunity to ask few questions: - What do you think about the construction industry? - Would you consider a career in construction? Why? - Why is the construction industry not attracting more black people? Some responses: “The construction industry is designed to have black people as labourers. We are not slaves.” “I haven’t seen any black person in a leadership role.” “I had my NVQ level 3 and went to work on site as a chippy. I was the only black person on site. I was disrespected and sometimes dehumanised. I left construction and never went back to it.” “Many contractors and recruitment agencies hire us just to tick box. They don’t care about us.” CITB have launched a number of schemes to get people of diverse backgrounds into construction. One example is the “Pathways Into Construction” programme with the objective of attracting 11,800 people from diverse backgrounds into construction by working with colleges, employers, councils, housing associations etc. While this shows an emphatic commitment by CITB, I believe the change must start from the top. LEADERSHIP. Because “You Can’t Be What You Can’t See.” The industry must take meaningful steps to support and promote black professionals in the industry into leadership roles. This approach not only recognised the talent and expertise of individuals from diverse backgrounds but also helps to create a more representative leadership within organisations. SibiNet is dedicated to leading the change in fostering inclusivity by actively attracting individuals from disadvantaged backgrounds. We are enthusiastic about collaborating with stakeholders and industry experts to spearhead meaningful change and create a more equitable and accessible landscape for all. The DEI pushback reminds me of the period following Reconstruction, which was a period when America was governed well. Redemption, which followed, led to the Black Codes, more racial terrorism and forced subjugation, imprisonment and disenfranchisement. Allies faded away and left the freed formerly enslaved to the mercy of the white power structures in the south. What happens next in today's environment depends on how well we are governed and led, and how much we are willing to accept. https://lnkd.in/evSF3n6b

Equitable and inclusive development in Black communities requires leadership grounded in local understanding. BLP’s mission to support Black and brown professionals in public sector roles allows these leaders to advocate for policies that align with community needs and drive economic inclusion. By crafting development policies that uplift Black neighborhoods, Black Pennsylvanians build a foundation of social and economic impact that extends beyond individual projects. This approach leverages community knowledge, resilience, and ingenuity to ensure dynamic growth.
