Executive Creative Director at OLIVER. If you want to know how I think, flick through my posts on Linked In.

I was talking to Alistair V. the other day about making things simple. We were discussing all the usual themes. Less is more. Throw things.out. Reduce until you can’t reduce any more. Etc. But he said something to me I hadn’t thought of before. Simplicity requires elegance. And elegance is the tough part. The ability to make the right choices to elegantly reach people on both an emotional and rational level. The best work is not only simple, it’s classy. Like a pass from De Bruyne. Or a Picasso squiggle of a dove. Elegantly simple. Need to think more about that. OLIVER makes things simple for its clients. Which is why we are so useful to so many people. And have grown so well.

In 2008 I worked on the launch of the then new Rolls-Royce Ghost. The whole design philosophy behind the Ghost was simplicity as, for those who have everything, the elegances and sophistication that often comes with it is one of the most aspired to attributes. And I love a quote... so here is a tangental one for you that is a great example of the principle of simplicity being pursued by one of the best... 'Football is a simple game complicated by people who should know better'... Bill Shankly. *bonus prize if you can tell me which early 2000's Cannes winning agency used this quote to sum up their approach to creativity?

I think those who know the art of simplicity make it their craft. Don't forget Cantona.

'Brutal Simplicity of Thought' that was the mantra at M&C Saatchi. I lived by it for many years. It made me a much, much better creative during my time there. It was often very difficult to drag clients to the same space, but it gave you a joint mission. Simple is not hard. But it requires belief. And conviction.

I’m excited to explore this further this when we sit down to write that book…

da Vinci said: Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication. It's what Apple based their whole brand ethos on. Apparently.* *Read it in the Steve Jobs biography.
