What would you do with no phone, no GPS, no internet, no television? For some, I think that would be a blessing. 😂 Most in the space industry already understand that with each launch from space capable nations, the landscape in space becomes more complex. This article highlights some very important points about the future of warfare as it begins to delve into the space domain and some of it, is just downright disturbing to think about. For instance, John Plumb is quoted in the article as stating, “Russian plans for a space-based nuclear device would threaten the standing the U.S. has carved out in low-Earth orbit, both for a growing commercial sector and military assets. Detonating such a weapon could inflict damage to satellites already deployed and render orbits near Earth as unusable for a year or more” The further that space capable nations progress, the more there becomes a clear need for redundancy in critical systems that we depend on for everyday life. I’ve said this before and I’ll say it again, the future is exciting, but man, it’s going to be dangerous as hell out there. Amid a growing focus on low Earth orbit satellites, the U.S. Space Force is making strides in a more traditional space-based capability: large missile-warning satellites. The Next-Generation Overhead Persistent Infrared (Next-Gen OPIR) program, with an estimated cost of $14 billion, is among the most expensive satellite procurement efforts in the Space Force today. These massive satellites play a crucial role in detecting missile launches and providing early warnings of potential threats to U.S. military forces and allied nations. Despite the trend towards smaller, cheaper satellites, the Next-Gen OPIR program underscores the military’s reliance on high-altitude, persistent observation sensors in geostationary and highly elliptical orbits.

This first-of-its-kind TacRS mission will demonstrate how the military would counter “on-orbit aggression,” reflecting the ongoing military escalation in the space domain. According to Interesting Engineering, during the mission, a spacecraft built and launched by Rocket Lab will “chase” a satellite made by True Anomaly, rendezvous with it and take close-up images. The Space Force’s Space Systems Command explained in a press statement that both companies are meant to simulate a “realistic threat response scenario in an on-orbit space domain awareness demonstration called Victus Haze.” This is all so the US Space Force will have a prepared response strategy for a scenario in which an adversary approaches one of its satellites. The strategy will reportedly focus on the rapid deployment of satellites that can counter threats to on-orbit military assets, meaning that Rocket Lab will be on standby for a short-notice launch. The announcement of this new mission comes shortly after Gen. Stephen Whiting, commander of US Space Command, warned of a “window of vulnerability” in space, telling the Senate Armed Services Committee that China and Russia have “transformed space into a contested warfighting domain.” He claims that Chinese forces are “moving breathtakingly fast in space,” and states that America “must rapidly increase the timeliness, quality and quantity of our critical national space and missile defense systems to match China’s speed and maintain our advantage.” While the US claims this mission is a countermeasure against Russian and Chinese military escalation, China and Russia seem to be blaming the US for escalation. Nevertheless, with the current escalating political state of the world (with companies like SpaceX functioning as a valuable military asset in Ukraine) it seems there are less and less efforts to maintain space as a demilitarized domain. #technews #security #military #defense #space #usa #geopolitics

Is America's Defense Department 'Rushing to Expand' Its Space War Capabilities?: America's Defense Department "is rushing to expand its capacity to wage war in space," reports the New York Times, "convinced that rapid advances by China and Russia in space-based operations pose a growing threat to U.S. troops and other military assets on the ground and U.S. satellites in orbit." [T]he Defense Department is looking to acquire a new generation of ground- and space-based tools that will allow it to defend its satellite network from attack and, if necessary, to disrupt or disable enemy spacecraft in orbit, Pentagon officials have said in a series of interviews, speeches and recent statements... [T]he move to enhance warfighting capacity in space is driven mostly by China's expanding fleet of military tools in space... [U.S. officials are] moving ahead with an effort they are calling "responsible counterspace campaigning," an intentionally ambiguous term that avoids directly confirming that the United States intends to put its own weapons in space. But it also is meant to reflect this commitment by the United States to pursue its interest in space without creating massive debris fields that would result if an explosive device or missile were used to blow up an enemy satellite. That is what happened in 2007, when China used a missile to blow up a satellite in orbit. The United States, China, India and Russia all have tested such missiles. But the United States vowed in 2022 not to do any such antisatellite tests again. The United States has also long had ground-based systems that allow it to jam radio signals, disrupting the ability of an enemy to communicate with its satellites, and is taking steps to modernize these systems. But under its new approach, the Pentagon is moving to take on an even more ambitious task: broadly suppress enemy threats in orbit in a fashion similar to what the Navy does in the oceans and the Air Force in the skies. The article notes a recent report drafted by a former Space Force colonel cited three ways to disable enemy satellite networks: cyberattacks, ground or space-based lasers, and high-powered microwaves. "John Shaw, a recently retired Space Force lieutenant general who helped run the Space Command, agreed that directed-energy devices based on the ground or in space would probably be a part of any future system. 'It does minimize debris; it works at the speed of light,' he said. 'Those are probably going to be the tools of choice to achieve our objective." Two sets of satellites from the Space Development Agency and Missile Defense Agency were launched together Wednesday as the organizations aim to demonstrate capabilities that could be used to detect and track adversaries’ hypersonic weapons and other advanced threats. One batch includes four L3Harris-built systems that will complete Tranche 0 of SDA’s Proliferated Warfighter Space Architecture (PWSA), which will include a total of eight missile-tracking space vehicles and 19 data transport satellites on orbit. Additionally, two Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor (HBTSS) platforms — one built by L3Harris and another by Northrop Grumman for the Missile Defense Agency — also went up.
