Recently our wonderful Whale Watch Co-Ordinator James (Instagram @james.chatfield14) took this incredible yet very sad photo on one of his dives. This is what he had to say: Today I saw one of my favourite species in an entirely different light. On our snorkel in fal bay today we came across a very sad sight - some amazing cuttlefish sadly caught in a pot. These were large animals - easily a foot long. Breeding males come in around this time of year to establish territories and wait for smaller females to join them. Pots are often set targeting these males when they arrive. Cuttlefish are targeted mercilessly throughout the year - young are trawled in deep water throughout the winter, and the large adults are potted or fished when they arrive in shallow water in spring and summer. There’s no catch limits and current evidence suggests this species is being fished to its absolute limit. Cuttlefish are one of my absolute favourite animals to see when snorkelling or diving - they’re so intelligent, and every encounter holds something special. Seeing so many pots in the bay so soon after the first cuttlefish have arrived really worries me, but I hope we’ll see our usual high numbers later in the year. I think it’s so important to start establishing limits on the size of this fishery - some respite from fishing pressure, whether that be a seasonal ban on deep sea trawlers in the winter, a seasonal ban on potting early in the spring when the large adults come into breed, or the establishment of minimum landing sizes, something needs to be done. The Cornwall good seafood guide rates any cuttlefish caught in Cornwall, no matter how, as unsustainable, so something needs to be done to protect these amazing animals. There are some amazing projects focussed on understanding and conserving cuttlefish - Cuttlefish Conservation is just one. Harbor porpoises are the most common cetacean in the Puget Sound, and the species can also be found across the northern hemisphere (harbor porpoise range map below). A recent study looked at harbor porpoises that live around Greenland, where there is little daylight in the winter, to see how their feeding behavior might change with the lack of light. The study, by Chambault et al. readable here: https://lnkd.in/gnShQqty, satellite-tagged 17 porpoises to monitor how they dive, and some of the animals dove more than 60,000 times over the course of the 5 months they were studied! The scientists found that the porpoises both dove deeper at night, and those deep dives became more frequent as summer transitioned into winter. This is the opposite of many other marine mammals, who have shallower dives at night. Harbor porpoises echolocate to find food, and so even in dark winters, they can forage at all hours of the day and are likely diving deeper at night for specific types of prey. #HarborPorpoise #AnimalBehavior #Cetaceans
