Some of you will laugh at this ad, some won’t and won’t understand why some of you are laughing. That’s because it contains slang, slang which has different meanings in different countries. This was part of the 2004 launch campaign for Coca-Cola’s Dasani bottled water in the UK. And instead of doing consumer research, they imported their advertising straight from the States, no edits. It bombed because ‘spunk’ doesn’t mean the same thing in the UK as it does in the US: in the UK, it’s slang for s*men, in the US it's courage. The launch was also shrouded in controversy from their claims that the water was pure and to a test batch being contaminated. Coca-Cola withdrew Dasani within 5 weeks of launching and never came back. The UK bottled water industry is worth over £2billion and growing: that was a costly mistake for them to make. Moral of the story: don’t lie to consumers and always test that your messaging resonates. #marketresearch #adtesting #productlaunch #consumerinsights

In the 1950s, Guinness Brewery's Managing Director, Sir Hugh Beaver, missed a shot while hunting with friends. To lighten the mood, he claimed the Golden Plover [Bird] was Europe's fastest bird. But when he couldn't find a reference to confirm it, the idea for the Guinness Book was born.
