The racial justice movement is under attack by opponents who want to stop our progress. Instead of retreating, we need to redouble our commitment to bolster the movement to build a California where everyone belongs and thrives. This is why the Asian Pacific Fund is proud to support the California Black Freedom Fund, legal experts, advocates, and philanthropic leaders to launch the LEAD for Racial Justice Initiative. LEAD provides legal education and tools to help nonprofits fully understand their ability to conduct vital racial justice work. President and Founder @ The Legal Accountability Project / Attorney, Advocate & Former Law Clerk / Above the Law Contributor
There are many ways to create social change. One of my favorite D.C. events is the Congressional Women's Softball Game 🥎, where female members of Congress play the Press (“the Bad News Babes”) to raise money for the Young Survival Coalition and #BeatCancer. This was the 16th Annual softball game to raise funds and raise awareness, and this year’s game raised over $600,000. ⚾The game convenes many stakeholders: Congress, the Press, nonprofit leaders and advocates, survivors, and sponsors (donors) who support the work. It’s a bipartisan event: Democrats and Republicans play together on Team Congress, and it’s a collaborative environment with the Press (who in their day jobs, hold Congress #accountable). ⚖️The Legal Accountability Project, too, convenes many stakeholder groups (some of which exist in tension with each other): law students, #lawschools (career services/faculty), law clerks, and the judiciary. Donors make the work possible. The Press amplifies our work (and also holds the #judiciary accountable, occasionally). Congress, too, is a stakeholder, as legislative solutions like the #JudiciaryAccountabilityAct to extend Title VII to the federal #judiciary, as well as general oversight over the Third Branch, are urgently necessary. 🥎In my role at LAP, I often make tough decisions where stakeholders are in tension. Supporting a mistreated clerk versus maintaining a judge as an ally? Providing a candid assessment to student leaders of challenges I face with their administration and urging them to #advocate, versus working to improve relations with the administration (and not sparking widespread student advocacy)? ⚾While LAP endeavors to convene as many stakeholders as possible - and to engage with everyone who wants to help (and wants to do better), ultimately, our primary stakeholders are the law students and the law clerks. LAP is a student-centric and clerk-centric organization. 🚀LAP has always been - and will continue to serve as - the resource I wish existed when I was a law student applying for #clerkships, as well as a mistreated law clerk not sure where to go for support and assistance. We are that resource for thousands of students and clerks. 🎟️And hey, perhaps someday LAP will be large enough to start planning our own fundraisers to support our critical #transparency, #accountability, and #equity work! In the meantime, sometimes it’s nice to just take a night (partially) off to watch some of my favorite members of Congress and reporters play softball. 🥎 #CWSG #accountability #transparency #nonprofits

At Equal Justice USA we kept seeing the same problem 😣: grassroots community leaders struggling to secure funding 💰💵💲. We couldn't find a good resource, so we built🏗️ one. From scratch. It took so many months and required so much work, but the team persisted because only 7% of philanthropic dollars are targeted toward Black, Indigenous, Latinx, and POC communities. Introducing: Getting Grant Ready, a *FREE* resource customized for emerging grassroots organizations, aspiring grant writers in community-led, violence prevention movements, and midsize organizations seeking diverse funding opportunities. Please share widely! 🎉🎉🎉 https://lnkd.in/e-PwngUg

Today, we recognize Juneteenth, which commemorates the day in 1865 when the final enslaved people in Galveston, Texas learned that they were free — more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation took effect. At C-Strategies, we’re proud to work with clients who work every day to advance racial equity in their communities and throughout our state through nonprofit work, policy and advocacy, mutual aid and more.
