Your red flag can be a false alarm A few years ago when I was trying to break in to the construction industry, after my real estate development certification from USC. I spoke with a classmate’s connection who is a recruiter. The conversation was not fruitful, she told me about the decade it took for people to advance and that I should contact people I’ve worked with/around, as a business owner so they can tell me what I should do or how I can grow. I enter the construction industry, received an opportunity based on my qualifications, passed experiences, education, integrity and work ethic. Some things I questioned if I should leave out, I was told not to cease shining bright. So I included it, highlighted it. Shared my story, the construction executive hired me about 20 minutes after talking. // As I’m looking for work, and being told we’re considering you. I found out that the recruiter thought “oh you have a job: you have a business.” IT WAS NEVER COMMUNICATED TO ME until I followed up on something else/another position. 100% upfront, what my history is; where and how I got my my experience; the rooms I’ve been in; stances I’ve taken for the community with construction, transportation and beautification. Listed on my long resume. Discussed during the interview. What you get with me: - [ ] I think big picture. - [ ] I’m able to communicate effectively with people of all calibers, capabilities, abilities. I’ve worked with dignitaries to community members, and communicate well with our disadvantaged communities; - [ ] I’m able to think independently, critical thinking, make connections between ideas/plans/data; - [ ] I love to read. Either you’ll view the knowledge as a benefit to you, because I’m going to share the opportunity or as some feel, are threatened because I don’t push buttons and can’t do the bare minimum. Reread my first point. - [ ] Due to the range of people I’ve worked with, for, or decision makers I’ve been in the room with, there’s things I will never do to screw someone over, a business over, people over; I also won’t schmooze you. It’s not my form of networking nor friendship. - [ ] I’m committed, loyal, however I won’t be used by a company. I also won’t be disrespected by a company or its employees and the company allows it. I’ve made mention on this platform or another of my co-worker/lead pointing her hands like a s h o t g u n then h a n d g u n with full voice effects after her boss gave me accolades in front of the team after a presentation I made. - [ ] I’m creative, innovative and most times it’s appreciated; most people see the benefit to the company. - [ ] I hustle. I don’t compete. My hustle May outwork you. It’s not my intention, I’m always focused on being the best me and making a positive impact. - [ ] I also don’t need to/won’t discuss whatever business I’ve done with a company. I don’t need to poach anyone. I know how to pull resources, contacts and databases. never done it, never will.

Working with difficult clientele always seems to be a frustration of many construction professionals. What if you could eliminate that part of the job and ONLY work on your own company's projects while operating within a builder/developer? Dallas APMs, PMs and Construction Executives - if this sounds like something you might be interested in, please reach out as two of my best builder/developers are hiring top talent just like yourself. Have hesitations working with a recruiter? I get it. One cold hard truth about recruiting and sales that I've learned to navigate throughout my six years in construction-specific recruitment. 👇 Don't expect to be motivated every day to get out there and make things happen. You won't be. Don't count on motivation. Count on ✨ Discipline ✨ Motivation comes and goes. So to keep yourself accountable, more than motivation, you need to train yourself to be disciplined. Hiring around the holidays can be difficult if you don't plan for it.... Hiring managers are traveling, candidates are traveling, projects get pushed, people get sick, etc. If you start recruiting too late, you might miss out on the ideal candidate. If you work with Michael Page, we will find out when to start recruiting a role depending on the ideal hire date. We will keep you up to date on the candidates' travel plans, when they can interview, and any potential bonuses that come towards the end of the year. Be proactive and reach out to myself or anyone on our Indianapolis construction team today to start talking about hiring. Katie Tipsword | Kelsey Ryan | Finn Bauer

People who know me well know that one of my personal goals is to make the construction industry a better place, both for those of us who have been at it for a little while, and especially for those who are new to the industry. Yesterday, I got this message from one of my connections. This person is a recruiter for a construction firm, and while they have many years of recruiting experience, they are new to the construction industry... and now I know that, even if it is just this one person gaining benefit, this effort has not been in vain. If you focus on helping people - helping them get better, helping them be happier, helping them help others - good things will happen for you. #ConstructionIndustry #ConstructionRecruiters #CommercialConstruction #TheFishingRecruiter

Imagine you're building a house. You could #hire someone with loads of #experience in construction, but if they're lazy or don't put in the effort, your house might not turn out so great. On the other hand, if you hire someone with a strong #work ethic, even if they're new to construction, they'll give it their all to get the job done right. That's the key difference between experience and work ethic. Having a strong work ethic means you're dependable, #motivated, and willing to put in the effort to do a good job, no matter what. It's like having a personal drive to do your best at work. Someone with a strong work ethic doesn't just clock in and out—they go above and beyond, taking pride in their work and striving for excellence. They're the ones who show up early, stay late if needed, and always give 100%. In the end, a strong work ethic can often outweigh experience because it speaks to a person's character and dedication. You can teach someone the skills they need for a job, but you can't teach them how to have a #strong work #ethic. So, when you're looking for the perfect candidate, focus on finding someone who's #eager to roll up their sleeves and get the job done, rather than just someone who's been around the block a few times.
