“You achieve what you celebrate.” I recently had the opportunity to hear Frank Blake speak, and I especially loved his message about celebration being crucial in leadership. As CEO of The Home Depot from 2007-2014, he transformed the company’s culture and production despite the economic downturn. And so much of that, according to him, is due to his culture of celebration and appreciation. I think that’s a great reminder for those of us in leadership. There’s always something worth celebrating and acknowledging. And it’s really important to put time and attention into that. Even the smallest accolades can add up to make a massive impact. And you never know whose day you’ll turn around by giving simple acknowledgment. And I’d say that a huge part of that is how, in order to consciously celebrate our team members every day, it forces us to slow down and pay more attention to the little things we might miss otherwise. Especially when we are in a challenging market. Because that’s when this is the most important. Let’s remember to celebrate our team members in public AND one-on-one. And when doing it, remember to be specific. We need to tell our team members: 🏅 WHY they are great 🏅 and HOW their individual contribution is exceptional. When we celebrate others (especially our team), we create an environment of: 💪 Gratitude 💪 Positivity 💪 Abundance No matter the market, no matter the season–there’s always someone and something to celebrate. Leadership isn’t about telling your team what to do, it’s inspiring them to follow what you do. Sunday’s is one of my favorite days because we deep clean a zone and today was bathroom day. My team is liable to see me on a ladder dusting the vents, scrubbing toilets, mopping floors…the list goes on. I don’t require my team to do anything they haven’t seen me do along side them 1000 times!
