Opportunity for all. What does this mean to you?    I was recently named Distinguished Citizen of the Year by Champlain College. They invited me to speak at Convocation about my story and the work of the Vermont Futures Project. I shared our mission question which is: How can we use data to support the evolution of Vermont’s economy towards a thriving future full of opportunity for all? I said to the audience, “Not just for some, or most… but opportunity for all. That’s what brought my family here – the American Dream and promise of opportunity. My work is to protect that promise for generations to come, including for all of you.”  Over 80% of this year’s incoming class at Champlain College are from out of state. They are coming from 32 different states and 5 different countries to pursue opportunities here in Vermont. Our state will be a better place if we create the conditions for these students to consider Vermont as a place to live and thrive long term.     This photo represents the “why” behind the work that I do. It’s to honor the legacy of my parents. They immigrated to Vermont with very little money, no college degrees, and barely knew any English – but they were still able to find ways to participate in the economy. My brothers and I were the beneficiaries of their hard work, and the generous support from a community that believed in our potential.  Now I get to pay it forward. I have an unrelenting belief in human potential. I want Vermont to be a place where anyone has a fair chance to pursue their dream.    It starts with creating a welcoming and inclusive culture. Vermont needs more people! Welcoming new people to our state doesn’t erase the existing culture – it adds vibrancy and richness to an ever-evolving mosaic that allows our communities to realize an even greater collective potential.  Being a Vermonter shouldn’t be defined by how many generations your family has been here, where you were born, or any other arbitrary exclusionary guidelines. Anyone who wants to be here and participate meaningfully in our communities should be able to call themselves a Vermonter if they choose to.  Who knows? They might even become the next Distinguished Citizen. #Vermont #OpportunityForAll #InclusiveEconomy

Why did the Coalition for Career Development (CCD) Center signed on to a letter supporting the creation of the Congressional Bipartisan Opportunity Youth Caucus (BOYC)? On the 8th of August many young people in Scotland will receive their results. This can be daunting - especially for young people who may not yet know what they want to do, or for those who experience challenges and/or changes of plan. On Scottish Results Day, will you share your career story to inspire and reassure young people? What Exactly is First Gen 🤔 Being a first-gen can mean different things to different people. It can mean being the first in one's family to attend college or university, be the first in ones family to immigrate to the country, or those who are the first in the family to navigate the corporate career world for the first time. Regardless of the specific background, being a first-gen can come with unique challenges and opportunities. On one hand, you have the opportunity to break new ground and pave the way for future generations in your family. On the other hand, you may not have the same level of guidance and support as someone whose family has worked in corporate America for generations. This can present obstacles and require you to be more resourceful and self-sufficient. Ultimately, being the first in your family to be in corporate America can be a source of pride and motivation, as well as a unique challenge to navigate. Peerhood aims to be that support and guidance that’s needed to not only navigate the corporate space, but excel.
