[Our ambassadors 🎙] Almost a year after Pierre Vanstoflegatte became CEO of Colas, he gave his initial assessment of the Group’s activities to Le Moniteur magazine. In the below abridged version of the interview with Jérémy Bellanger, our CEO lays out his road map and the Group’s major strategic axes.
💬 𝐈𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐝𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐨 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐆𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩
“I began with a tour of our subsidiaries to better grasp the specific challenges of our activities. This process, which I am continuing every other week, is still ongoing, because we are present in some fifty countries. But nonetheless, I already have an idea of what makes our group special: a strong local presence and the capacity to cover two worlds, construction works and industrial activities, i.e. the production of materials.”
💬 𝐑𝐨𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐚𝐩
“Our major international development strategic axes remain unchanged. We will continue to focus on the United States and Canada as well as on Europe, where we have ambitions in Germany and in Scandinavia, and to a lesser extent in Australia. Regarding our businesses, we are now starting the second phase of the rollout of a corporate project we launched three years ago, which involves reaffirming the importance of our industrial activities and developing the performance of our aggregate production sites.”
💬 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐧𝐝𝐮𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐀𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬
“The course of history is not towards the stopping of production, but rather to produce under better conditions with less environmental impact. The fact that the time required for opening new sites is getting longer demonstrates that the stakes of environmental and societal acceptability are increasingly being taken into account. On all levels (water, air, dust, noise, etc.), the requirements are becoming stricter in a process which I consider to be healthy.”
💬 𝐔𝐬𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐑𝐞𝐜𝐲𝐜𝐥𝐞𝐝 𝐌𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐥𝐬
“There are obvious differences in terms of maturity between various countries. […] As a company, it is our conviction that we must recycle some of the materials that we process. […] Developing the circular economy is fundamental because, in addition to improving the carbon footprint of our construction activities, it offers a complement if the market for natural aggregate production were to decline.”
💬 𝐃𝐞𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐛𝐨𝐧𝐢𝐳𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐈𝐧𝐟𝐫𝐚𝐬𝐭𝐫𝐮𝐜𝐭𝐮𝐫𝐞
“Strengthening road and rail asset maintenance and adopting a mindset of anticipation and planning mean a lower carbon footprint. The second lever we hope to see become more common is construction solutions that are more environmentally responsible. That is why we are investing heavily in the development of bio-sourced, low carbon, and recycled products…”
