Hypothetical question: should an interpreter be emotionally involved or be an independent observer? I think the latter. If you are emotionally involved in the process of interpreting, interpreting becomes extremely difficult. After all the emotions we convey are the emotions of the speaker not our own.
Emotional neutrality (similar to one that a psychotherapist has) on the other hand is the solid foundation i.e. subtly conveying emotions of the speaker without actually feeling them. It does not prevent the interpreter from being expressive. The neutrality is the true stress relief.
However if the interpreter has OWN emotions to what is being interpreted, especially negative, it is similar to countertransference in psychology when the interpreter begins to project own self onto the situation. Eg when an interpreter feels uncomfortable to interpret profanities or has difficulty because of own moral or religious beliefs (which a professional interpreter must not have at least when interpreting).
So the only emotion related problem in interpretation is how to convey speaker emotions and make sure there is no admix of interpreter emotions.
It is not about the interpreter emotions. So what is the value of this course ?
The main challenge is to be aware of your emotions (we are all human) without acting on them in interpretation otherwise you ll countertransfer. If you try to use your own emotions you just add fluff which is a no no in my books.
Granted, when interpreting emotional speeches (religious, propaganda, politics etc) the interpreter may be carried away by the emotion of the speaker but it is done analytically in order to convey the speaker emotion in interpretation not to be dominated by that emotion no matter how strong.
Also conveying emotions is language/language combination specific.
